Well, I have been out a total of 5 times in the past two weeks and I have made some awesome discoveries with my brand new, very expensive detector.
First - Aluminum is definitely the most plentiful element on the planet. <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">
The MXT can pick up the tip of a pop rivet at six inches.
All that is ID'd as rings 'n things ain't necessarily so.
When you do pick up a piece of trash go back and look at it later and in good light. You may be pleasantly surprised.
I did most of my searching in C/J Mode with trigger in center, gain at first preset (noisy from all the iron but I don't want to miss nothin!), Threshold at barely audible. Discovered interesting trick. I have the Whites probe but it won't pick up unless you touch the item. I would switch the MXT mode to Relic, lay the MXT on the ground with the coil next to the hole. I would then grab a handful of dirt and pass it over the top of the coil. If it beeped I dumped half of it into my other hand and did it again. If not, I dumped it our and took the stuff from my other hand and kept doing this until I found something. Sometimes the signal would just disappear. Sometimes lost, sometimes it was something very small that slipped between my fingers. I got to be pretty quick at it.
I separated my finds into four piles. Aluminum, Iron/Steel, Copper/Brass, Good/Interesting stuff of any material. I piled it all on to four paper plates and took this picture.
Keep in mind that I have lived in this house for 35 years and bought it from the original owner. Some of the more interesting finds were:
Total Coins Quarters - 4, Dimes - 4, Pennies - 19. All modern stuff.
Marbles type of compass, broken
Copper jacket from a bullet and 1/2 brass casing of 300 Savage. (I have 300 Sav. rifle but do not remember ever shooting it in the garden.
Pendant with top loop broken - Panama.
Piece of copper/brass that kind of shaped like a rail road track, about 1-1/4" long by 1/4" high. No idea what it is from.
Penny sized copper disk with number 4070 stamped into one side. Tool room brass?
Bracelet clasp and an army tank.
One piece has me really stumped. It is on the lower plate in about the 2 o'clock position. Brass/Copper tube about 1 1/4" long and oval 1/4 x 3/8. Has very small spring loaded catch. It is badly dented and has ornate design or printing on it. I will try to clean it up enough to get it apart without destroying it. All I can think of is a pill holder.
Most of the stuff came from our family garden. That is why it is all bent and twisted. 35 years of rototilling takes it toll on relics. The couple of pennies found there were badly corroded. Probably from the fertilizer.
Maybe I'll get a chance to go to a school yard or ball field next.
All this and it only took a $700 detector to find it. Ain't life grand! <img src="/metal/html/tongue.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":b">
