The Most Plentiful Elememt

Well, I have been out a total of 5 times in the past two weeks and I have made some awesome discoveries with my brand new, very expensive detector.
First - Aluminum is definitely the most plentiful element on the planet.
The MXT can pick up the tip of a pop rivet at six inches.
All that is ID'd as rings 'n things ain't necessarily so.
When you do pick up a piece of trash go back and look at it later and in good light. You may be pleasantly surprised.
I did most of my searching in C/J Mode with trigger in center, gain at first preset (noisy from all the iron but I don't want to miss nothin!), Threshold at barely audible. Discovered interesting trick. I have the Whites probe but it won't pick up unless you touch the item. I would switch the MXT mode to Relic, lay the MXT on the ground with the coil next to the hole. I would then grab a handful of dirt and pass it over the top of the coil. If it beeped I dumped half of it into my other hand and did it again. If not, I dumped it our and took the stuff from my other hand and kept doing this until I found something. Sometimes the signal would just disappear. Sometimes lost, sometimes it was something very small that slipped between my fingers. I got to be pretty quick at it.
I separated my finds into four piles. Aluminum, Iron/Steel, Copper/Brass, Good/Interesting stuff of any material. I piled it all on to four paper plates and took this picture.
Keep in mind that I have lived in this house for 35 years and bought it from the original owner. Some of the more interesting finds were:
Total Coins Quarters - 4, Dimes - 4, Pennies - 19. All modern stuff.
Marbles type of compass, broken
Copper jacket from a bullet and 1/2 brass casing of 300 Savage. (I have 300 Sav. rifle but do not remember ever shooting it in the garden.
Pendant with top loop broken - Panama.
Piece of copper/brass that kind of shaped like a rail road track, about 1-1/4" long by 1/4" high. No idea what it is from.
Penny sized copper disk with number 4070 stamped into one side. Tool room brass?
Bracelet clasp and an army tank.
One piece has me really stumped. It is on the lower plate in about the 2 o'clock position. Brass/Copper tube about 1 1/4" long and oval 1/4 x 3/8. Has very small spring loaded catch. It is badly dented and has ornate design or printing on it. I will try to clean it up enough to get it apart without destroying it. All I can think of is a pill holder.
Most of the stuff came from our family garden. That is why it is all bent and twisted. 35 years of rototilling takes it toll on relics. The couple of pennies found there were badly corroded. Probably from the fertilizer.
Maybe I'll get a chance to go to a school yard or ball field next.
All this and it only took a $700 detector to find it. Ain't life grand!

You don't have to flip to relic to pass items in front of your coil. It works as well in the mode you are detecting in.
If you are using the Whites Bullseye as your probe then you should be able to pick up a nickel at 3/4 of an inch. If not email me and I will send you the instructions on making internal adjustments. If the probe is new you can also opt to call the person you ordered from to discuss.
Also it appears you dug many negative VDI's from the looks of your picture. You will be better served to only dig the plus items when you hit those schools and parks. Your ratio of coins vs. junk will increase if you do.
Do not go by the wording on the display but trust in the VDI and confidence bars. You will soon get a feel for what is diggable etc.
If your digging a dime signal, VDI 78-82, and it says 2 inches deep, you can stop digging after four inches since it will probably be a soda can, etc. Now this depends on where you are at as well. If you are getting that signal behind an old homestead I would probably dig in hopes of finding a cache. I would probably pass it up at the local soccer field. But who knows, that local soccer field may have held some old homesteads in the past. These will have to be your decisions.
When I first started out over a year ago I averaged about 25 cents an outing of around two hours. I now average 96 cents an hour.
I primarily use C/J Mode with trigger center, disc between 2 & 4, threshold barely audible and gain between 7 and +2 depending on the location and the amount of trash.
If you want to limit your amount of trash even more and increase your percentages on coins and jewelry then did all signals from +8 to +22 and from 50 to 90. I personally also dig "many" of the 23 to 49 VDI's since these readings could be a heavier gold ring. Will probably be pull-tabs though.. And I make this decision depending on where I am, etc.
There is no 100% guarantee on any reading but I would say that 90% of my readings from 78-82 are dimes and 18-20 VDI's will be nickels, 83-85 will be quarters and pennies range from 50-77.
I believe trigger forward will also eliminate the tone on items below your discrimination setting. This may be helpful in extremely trashy areas.
The MXT is a great detector. Give it time.

Lots of good advice. Thanks.
I flipped it to Relic so I would get a tone from iron. It was discrimated out in C/J. There is so much trash that I would always find a bunch of stuff in any one spot. Figured I may as well start cleaning the place up from all my past sins.
I only dug on good + VDIs but all the iron was there too. Most of the signals were from combinations of metals in the ground. My good indication was usually aluminum. Sometimes small but aluminum. One time it was only a 3/8" long piece of cutting from a twist drill when I must have drilled into some aluminum stock. That is not much mass. I am impressed what it can pick up. Now I just have to train myself to be more discriminating. On the other hand, this is also my practice bed. I will be more selective in a lawn, especially when it is not mine.
My Bulls Eye is brand new. I think I will talk to my local dealer. That is why I bought all my stuff from him. I like someone close by that can lead me by the hand.
I had not expected to dig up many coins from my own yard. I am just too tight to drop money all over the place. Most of my coins have been found by the drive way - dropped by my visitors. Mostly my own kids. Only found two pennys out in the yard itself.
After I am through playing with my stock coil I will try the same areas with the 4x6 minishooter. I have not used it yet. They are the only two coils I have. I knew I would be hunting in trashy sites.
The school yard I was taken to for training by my dealer was actually the quietest THing I have done. It is so well hunted that it is pretty well cleaned up.
Thanks again for the input. Now if I could just find a way to remember it all. I just have too many senior moments but, at my age, I am entitled to them. It used to bother me but now I just forget that too.

I too be a senior--68 next birthday-I two have had Senior moments for 20 years-So I tell my self--REMEMBER TO REMEMBER but if some one does not remind me I never rember! I most always remember on the SECOND trip to the basement what I forgot the first time down--Get my excerise that way--Arnt the golden years great!!!!-deathwind1
