The MD gods were playing with me today.

Yes every sport has them. If you gold you are sure to play your best game of the year the last time you are able to play before the snow flies. Nope no chance to hone that fine swing you just perfercted.

I went out in the AM and there was nothing. My SE was new and well thought of selling it cheap and taking up something new crossed my mind. Then the battery went dead. I detect in all metal and I am certain that all those sounds you hear eat the batteries quicker. I go get a spare set. Yep I forgot to throw them in my bag. Luckily I was only a few blocks from home.

I get back wondering why i bothered and within a few minutes I get a solid tone. Like everything at this site there always are lots of other tones in close proximity but I thought what the heck and dug after taking lots of time to pin point it.

down 8 inches and nothing. Scan the dirt and scan the hole no signal that matches what I saw before digging. At this site that is not uncommon so I figure that my wonderful day continues. But I then scanned the side walls with the x-1 probe and there was the tone. I dug a bit and out pops a quarter. Perhaps the mystery is solved. Maybe in some areas the signal does not come through so that it can be pinpointed accurately.

I go for maybe 10 minutes and book one more good one. In alittle over an houre I dug perhaps 7 holes and found something good in 5 of them. One target at the end did not look right but I was curious as to what it might be and it was the first time I got two coins in the same hole. They were in fact pressed into each other. Just modern dimes but a first is a first. As we all know a first is not always something great.

So I went home happy and especially happy I got the X-1 when I got my SE. I am certain the SE does a great job and inspite of my shortfall of experience I was able to find some things and nearly all of them were surrounded by other objects or signals at least where for perhaps half of them the only hint I had they were there was the sound (ferrous) as the readout did not show what It was until I barely moved accross the area where the sound came from. I was able to get the digital readout I was after and always was able to repeat it and get it from different angles but they could easily have been missed.

Oh the two dimes were in a spot I have covered several times with a Quattro and with The SE at least once when I first got it.

My only negative for the day was that nothing was silver. I am finding lots of coins from the 60's but not one pre 65. I did find a 1920 penny but I want to find my first silver. Gold would be good too but at this site I am never going to find it as I would have to dig every few feet if I dug every signal that could be gold.

That is what this hobby is all about. Going out and digging for those elusive old Coins and such. Even though you didn't find anything old yet except the 1920 Wheat, that just tells you that if this is the same area that you got the old Wheat Cent from, that there is in fact a few old Silver Coins there waiting for the patient detectorist to swing his coil over. It is always a good day detecting when you are out and digging signals and learning a few new things about a new detector that will help out in the long run down the road. So be patient and you may find that first Silver Coin on your very next swing. Good Luck and HH.

Good going Raptro,
nice to see you are coming to grips with your SE.

Probably only a matter of time before something older is swung over!

I hope you realize that I was being a bit facicious. I have this belief that my god enjoys busting my ass all the time. All in good fun mind you but he just can't miss an opportunity to play a practical joke.

I realize that it will be a while before I will consider myself proficient with the SE and this weekend was fantastic for this time of year so I of course my first hour out would be full of frustration.

I do believe that as I learn and take time to really run the probe properly good things will happen.

I am not sure why I have yet to get something silver but that day will come I am sure. I just get the feeling it is not to be this year. Cold is on the way and it will be time to move on to skiing.

Tell you what Rapto,I kicked off with an XS,
I boy was it "different," ~ but amazing.
I remember the first thing I ever detected with it,I thought WHOA!

It was the weirdest response I ever heard from a detector...

I wasn't on a forum,so ~ went cold turkey ~ boy what a learning curve!
The Explorer II came out while I was still learning ~ I got one.
Six or seven months more with the Expl.II; and I bailed out, thinking
it was way too difficult to fly...

After that, a Garrett GTI2500,then a Corte's...

Meanwhile at the shop one of our guys was right into his Exp.II ( and showed me a thing or two about running the beast.)

So, back in the saddle again ~ and I tell you what it's the second time around,
I'm really familiar with things ~ and am really enjoying my SE...

I cannot imagine trying to learn how to use the SE or any of its predecessors without this forum or some of the literature that is out there. I had the quattro book which was such a big help with that machine and what I learned from that to some extent carries over to the SE.

I know there still is lots to learn but I think with a minimal of information you can go out and find stuff. But it get easier and you waste less time on crap as you get better. I guess some of the crap is actually something good that I did not dig but where I go there are so many signals that it would take an eternity to dig them all. I think once I get better I will pick a range and dig those to see what I might have been missing. But my mission now is to find my first silver coin. Pretty pitiful huh.

In any case I would not go back and have no regrets getting the SE. So far I think it has made ID'ing things even easier than on the quattro.

I wouldn't say that your desire for your first silver is "pitiful" Raptro,it's a great ~ and healthy desire mate.
I have a really great desire to detect my first gold coin...
I've just got to swing my coil over it ok?
One of these days ~ one of these days ~ when I least expect it !!!

POW!

Can't wait.
