The little thing that was the start of two huge companies...

Thought it was an old glass doorknob at first when I dug it up...but no.
Then I saw Devilbiss No 15 on the top and then it was easy to track down the company history which is interesting.

Dr. Devilbiss was a nose and throat doctor and he invented a better atomizer then was currently available in the 1800s to apply medical solutions to his patients more easily.
As he kept tinkering they improved, he went into manufacturing and eventually his company became the largest supplier of these type of products in the country.
His son got involved in the early 1900s and eventually they used this technology to move into the spray perfume bottle industry and early paint spraying technology.
The antique fancy glass perfume bottles this company made are highly collectible and the medical company and the paint spraying company split off and became huge, were both bought out a few times in the past few decades but are still around and each is still one of the largest in their respective industries.
Anyone in the industrial or auto spray finishing industries knows about this company, those in the medical field do too and this is the product that started it all.

This is atomizer no 15 which was patented in 1907-1908 and has been changed slightly over the years but is still sold today and is again almost identical to my old version but retails for the $75 or over range if you wanted to buy one now.

I found several pics of a few slightly different versions of mine online but I think I narrowed it down to the one you see in the box below which has a manufacturer's price tag of $1.50 on it so it has gotta be old.
In the area I found it there are also other targets and coins indicating the early 1900's era so I am going to consider this an antique.
Mine is missing the rubber bulb and the add on nasal guard accessory tip but the rest is still here.

As always researching the history of my finds is just about as interesting as looking for and digging them up.

That is a cool find, the history.. It's a dug find and still looks great..
