The legend of BBS and the introduction of the Equinox.

I have been burned by other machines but saved by the Sovereign series starting in the 1990s . Nothing since the Sovereign (in my opinion) has been versitile enough to compete with the versatility of a Sovereign.
In saying that, the Equinox looks to complete the versatility of a Sovereign to now being waterproof. I know the Equinox is new milti-iq tech, and separate from BBS. But if the Equinox can give me powerful set and detect settings, slice through salt wet sand abilities , and deep target correct audio with the ability to detect very deep, then I may have found my GT replacement.
Thoughts?
Share your opinion of sitting back until the Equinox (if any) bugs are sorted out then make the jump with the confidence that your sovereign can still hang with the rest and fill in the gap before the Equinox.
Thanks
HH

Never cared much for the BBS.

The in ground test would give the edge to the Sovereign GT.
Sovereigns are notorious for poor air tests and astounding in ground depth.

Very possible as I know little about the BBS. All I do know is nothing I could do would make the GT pick up that gold earring. For this reason I was never much of a BBS fan. Now the FBS on coins is a whole different story.

I agree!

Your absolutely right sometimes a machine doesn't meld with a user. For all I know I'm missing out by only sticking with Sovereign all these years. But my GT is at one with me and I know everything it is telling me about what's in the ground.

What works for you is the best.

Im not out there on the beach to coin hunt and anyone who says BBS isnt all that good hasnt had enough time with one. Im an Explorer guy ..... but when i started beach hunting i found deep targets were separated well enough at the lower register where small gold was........ minerals and targets sounded awfully like each other. Even the CTX has this issue but responds faster....... it also will loose targets a bit after you take a scoop.... and it has a very short response compared to an Xcal. Now in the dirt...... other machines seem better mostly because you have a TDI screen and all that additional information. BUT.....i Sov/Xcal will hold its own with any detector used on the beach.

The new machine is interesting. Its light, got to be faster to swing in the water, simple, faster, several freq options...... which really steps it up moving out of the water onto the dry sand. Has any dealer produced a water machine that never had some issues? We arent going to get away from that because salt water is hard on equipment. I still dont see why they put that external speak on it. Noticed they are changing up the phones as well.......... here we go looking for connectors. Yes im holding back....... why not i have a CTX and several Xcals. When they first come out we get all kinds of fish stories. Then of course we have the haters. I like to give a machine time to get out there and use it in locations i hunt in since machines can be location specific..... they just react differently. Also, there are a few more machines coming out i want to see and get more info on. BUT this looks like a winner to me....... just have to see how it does on targets.

My GT aint going anyhere soon nor my excal either for that matter..however if the eqnx performs great in surf and turf then some decisions will need to be made..as far as bbs and small gold it's no secret that it will miss quite alot of it but screams on bands very well.. my gt has found me many colonial era coins in moderately iron infested farm fields. .

My first machine was the Sovereign Gt. Bought it on the recommendation of my Brother in Law as I had absolutely no idea what to purchase. I grew quite frustrated trying to learn what the machine was telling me and in fact thought that I had wasted a lot of money. Purchased a Rons 180 Meter and the light at the end of the tunnel started to be seen. Now after a few years with the machine I am very hesitant to replace it as we work as a team. It has sniffed out a number of silver coins in places that I was told there was nothing left to be found Two of those properties produced 14 silver coins. It may be slow but then that fits this old man just fine. I do wish it was a bit lighter but a harness allows me to detect for a number of hours before I wear out

The equinox will have to prove itself before I will replace my proven Gt"s. Yes I have one waiting its turn.

For me I am a Sovereign lover and feel those that had the patience to learn it knows what it can do and it is so easy to use. I tried all the different Explorers and they were good, but I could find more good and less trash with the Sovereigns. I even when behind those with the Explorers and picked up some deeper and coins next to trash they couldn't get. Now the E-Trac to me would be my choice if I didn't have a Sovereign GT as it seem to work better for me than the Explorer did. I just wish that Minelab would have upgraded the BBS and made it lighter and had a built in 180 meter. I have 2 of the Equinox ordered myself as soon as they are released and hope they can come close to what my Sovereign GT can do.

Most people I talk to and even myself wondered what I got into when we got the Sovereigns, most hated it.The more we used them the better they got and seen so many nice finds in areas that were considered cleaned out, some were deep while others were with trash. We learned a lot as we used them and began to love them.
Even if the new Equinox does as good as the Sovereign GT or even a little better my GT will stay, some of the other will go as once we know the Sovereign it is the easiest one to use and not of a lot of things to mess with as it is a turn on a go detector.

Rick

Like Rick, George and others once you know the Sovereign its like no other detector, yes it has its weak points, but over all still one of the best detectors.I hope the Minelab Equinox is a success and has the longevity of the Sovereign, only time will tell. LOL like others I hated the Sovereign until learned. Sovereign users are

Ron..... same with the Xcal. The CTX did not REPLACE it for salt water hunting. Each has a place...... but ive not found one better persa. I find things about the E that can fill a gap for my beach hunting. One advantage maybe......... used out of warranty machines may be had at a good price. You arent seeing a ton of used Xcals or Sov for sale.

I have used my Sov GT for 12 years and recently added Nel Tornado coil for beach hunting and it works great. If the new machine works as advertised and at the listed price, it could put a lot of machines into retirement. I wanted a CTX 3030 but for me the price was to high. When it first came many people said that they would never buy it for the price. It seems everyone I know has one. I would never get rid of my Sov Gt but the new machines have everything that I wanted.

Norm..... id not have one either for the price if it werent for a friend who sold me his used on. As a water hunter living in Fl i see a lot of people with AT pros trying to use them in the salt water. Now...... if these same people grab up one of these new machine for a little more money knowing its a good all around choice....... competition could get a little more challenging for recent drops especially.

I use my Sovereigns to hunt the beaches. Not as much as I would like to, but as I recover fr9m healthissues I hope it picks up.

First I would like to say that any metal detector has a harder time finding small gold in wet salty sand because of the environment. Some single frequency machines do better, but then depth is sacrificed on larger gold that is deeper. There is always a trade off. I actually never concern myself with small gold. If I hit it that's good. But I'm after the larger gold. Chains and earrings are more than likely to stay in the sand with me.

Secondly unless this new detector is really really different I would expect it to behave like all the rest of Minelab multi frequency detectors.

Third I would say the performance of my sovereign on the beach is exactly what I'm after. Two issues.....the inability to get it wet and the weight. It looks like minelab is taking care of both. And for the same price that Sovereigns last sold at. The screen? I don't need one on the beach, but if it will do the job in the dirt and do the work of two detectors I can live with it.

One thing for sure they never handed it over to any of us hard core water hunters to test. That's what's needed, and could be the reason it never happened.

You are right Joe. Well who ever they are i hope they do a better job than the ones with the CTX. I mean seriously, did they even put the thing in salt water? Im thinking they did a good job giving us what we wanted in a new water/beach machine. BUT...... you can bet ill have my Xcals for PP mode. Thats the one area that an Xcal is hard to beat. I rarely use the PPer on the CTX....... i just dont like the VCO style that GBs out a target.

“. i just dont like the VCO style that GBs out a target.“

Me either! I read about guys praising the pinpointing features but I don’t understand them as I why would I want the signal to drop to nothing the more I keep it on?
Why do I have to keep turning it off, move off site, turn on again... firmware option please!

How does pinpointing work on the Equinox?
