The law in wash. st.

New member
Has anyone had a run in with the law in wash. st ? I'v looked at several site's about laws and regs and it seems you can't go anywhere without a permit or checking in with some one. It's not like I want to brake the law, but I thought we lived in america, land of the free. Is it just this state?:ban:

We have alot of parks here in Mass that are kind of grey areas....no one seems to have an answer when you ask.....SO...Here's what I do......Look respectfull.....Leave no sign you were ever there.......never, ever be seen in a park with anything which resembles a shovel....keep your lesche in it's pouch until ready to use......smile and be friendly to everyone around you.....I've been approached by the cops on many occasions and never had a problem.....i'm polite, friendly, and always pleasant to deal with.......I've been approached by park maintainance authorities and always allowed to continue to hunt once they see what I've found and yet no signs of any holes.......I also carry a grocery bag with some fake finds for some leverage...These are all things I have found in the past but pretend to have found in the current hunt.....A hyperdermic needle...condom wrappers....rusty razor blades....pocket knives....a couple .22 shell casings ...and of course trash.....you won't believe how people change their outlook when they see what you just found at their childs park...hehehe......Seriously though, just being pleasant goes further in this hobby than anything else....HH

Earth Tuner,

Here is what I found. I just got back into the hobby again. I Google'd my area and found the same thing. So, here in Lane County, OR we have a park district called Willamalane. They own and manage many park sites. One very near my home. I sent an email with my intent to use my detector on their property but let them know I wanted to ask permission before hand. I explained I use the techniques that preserve the ground as best as possible. They were very happy for my checking in first. Sent me a permit in an email, I just have to stop by their main office to get it validated. Then if I am approached by others that are not in favor of our hobby, I have a written permit from the park management to show them. I have found that if you are genuine, ask first, and see other's perspectives, you normally get what you are after. I would shoot some emails to the folks that manage the areas you are interested in. I would be shocked if you get a NO in reply.

[size=medium]here in the grand state of Wash. there are some counties that require permits. King co. for one. city of Spokan for another. you are required to check with the park ranger in all state parks. Some parks have been taken over by little leagues and even though they are public the public can't use them. that's our crooked special interest at work. as long as we fill our holes and don't use shovels here in Cowlitz Co. we can hunt and retrieve our targets.i for one have not run into any trouble in Clark Co. Hunting school properties is best done after the staff is gone. Here in the longview/kelso area one is allowed to hunt with-in the restrictions placed on us. fill your holes and no hunting on school grounds while school is in progress.

I have done some checking up here in the Everett area in snohomish county and it varies. Arlington and Mt Vernon have no restrictions on metal detecting in their parks as long as you fill your holes. Both Everett and Marysville parks allow metal detecting but do not allow you to dig holes and retrieve your targets.
