Officially the war ended Aug 14, 1945 in U.S. (Aug 15 in Far East) but 2 B-32 Dominators were sent on photography mission on Aug 18.
Fireworks happened.

and awarded him the Purple Heart (it being after hostilities had ceased.)
Sometimes they make....odd decisions. In Iraq troops were were looking for chemical agents, or mines to deactivate and were wounded After Iraq has surrendered
were often told it was not war/combat: "you injured yourselfs." (accident?!) :punch:

We have a family here that lost a son during the Vietnam War that's not on the Wall. The unit had gone on R. and R. and the plane crashed in the South China Sea on the way back so it wasn't considered combat related.

would be listed. Look at those killed on the 2 bad carrier accidents while in the process of launching air strikes.
Are they included, I don't know.
Here is the criterion:
"Names are added when it has been determined that a service member has died directly from combat-related wounds. Cancer victims of Agent Orange, and post traumatic stress suicides do not fit the criteria for inclusion upon the Memorial. Some have calculated that it would take another two or more entire Walls to include those."
