The invisible dime trick......

So I got my ETRAC yesterday and I brought it by my dad to show him how it worked. So my dad takes out a silver dime and throws it out on the front yard to see how it would pick it up.. So I swept the coil over the dime... null.... what the....?? null....null..... No matter how many times I swept over it would not pick it up. I'm assuming there was a large ferrous target underneath the dime (did not overload, or get any false signals) but i have seen those tests where the ETRAC is supposed to be able to see right through iron, why is the machine not picking up a surface silver? I moved the dime a couple feet away and it picked it up right away. Anyone have any ideas? Overall, no complaints about the ETRAC so far though, just concerned about this issue as I don't want a mistake I'm making to cost me any silver.

Also one more question: I turned on the detector at the beginning of the day, and threshold sounded fine. I did a noise cancel and it did not seem to change anything. For the rest of the day (6-7 hours) I went without a noise cancel and i didn't realize any audio issues. Should I be noise canceling more often? Or is noise cancel just something you do when you hear excessive noise? Thanks for reading, and input would be very helpful! -Mike

Im new with the etrac also, you might try putting the dime back where it was nulling out and try sweeping over it after you switch to a wide open quickmask screen to try and see what was nulling the spot out.Im assuming you were in the stock coin program.

My guess would be that you had an open screen with no disc at all... if you do that the E-TRAC's unmasking is not as good as it can be. Try setting it to Ferrous/2-tones and use the relic pattern. That should knock the iron out and make the dime audible. The manual addresses this feature of the E-TRAC. IT's software is such that if something is rejected it will not just null if there are two targets, (one rejected and one accepted)... if you use a little disc and the iron is rejected, then the ET will ignore the iron and signal the accepted target, the dime. You will miss iron masked targets if you hunt with an open screen, accepting all targets. If you want to hunt that way you would be better served with an Explorer.

I'm sorry I should have mentioned, I was in the stock coin mode, using multi-tone with sensitivity untouched. I thought relic mode accepts an iron target?

First of all, if you have a "wide open screen" NOTHING will null. You are telling it to accept all targets including iron.
Second, the E-Trac can not "see through iron". Nothing can. You will have to have some amount of silver showing for it to register.

Laslty (and most importantly) who will have to check your advanced settings. You need to be set for "high trash". This tells the machine to respond to any accepted signal, otherwise, it responds according to the main signal. If you are getting mostly iron signal it will null.

Nice, TY. I bet this was the problem.

i haven't used the e-trac but my sovereign wouldn't pick up a nickle on top of the ground. turns out there was a horse shoe in the ground. i would believe the e-trac would do the same if the iron was tuned out.

I've had my E-Trac null out on newer style quarters that were real shallow. When I went to AM in Quickmask they came in at a 50 Co number. I don't remember ever having that happen on silver though.
