He uses his real name here, Andrew Kalinowski, He is playing around on beaches and I'm not the consummate beach hunter. He's using a land machine to go out as far as he can and I'd appreciate any guidance any of you experienced hunters would give him.
Hello there
I'm sure you will get lots of advice from more experienced hunters than me, there are some super clever hunters on here. I would say you will need a good sand scoop, which makes recovery so much easier. Metal detectors don't find stuff which is far below the surface, and gold and metal sinks in soft sand very quickly. If something has been lost recently in soft sand you might get it, but after a couple of days it's sunk to deep. You need to try and notice if the sands on the beach have shifted (wind and tide do this). If the sands have shifted and you search the freshly uncovered sand you have a good chance. The more people that use an area the better your chances. Look for areas where people congregate. Near the entrance to the beach. It's best to check out some books for expert advice, then you can always refer back to them. The main thing is to get out as much as you can, and enjoy it.
SWEEP SLOW!!! and try to keep the coil the same distance above the sand through the whole swing. It's best to search an area properly than to rush around. Go slow, take breaks. Record your finds and hours spent, post your finds on here, there are lots of experts here who are very informative and friendly. Good luck and most of all stay safe and enjoy it . Merlin
I tell you several years ago this site helped me: http://web.archive.org/web/20080202045558/http://thegoldenolde.com/ He was a smart ole hunter he passed away a few years back but his family left the site up with some wonderful information for any hunter. We will need to know the type of machine and beach or location you are hunting. On a beach..... keep it simple. Learn a bottle cap and iron..... everything elce you dig or at least kick to see if its shallow gum paper. If its salt water..... be very careful if your machine isnt water proof. Clean your equipment everytime especially your cam locks. Like machines....... sand scoops differ. Keep your coil on the soil not 6 iches about it or you WILL miss small gold.
Congrats on getting a detector! I would take a bunch of targets= coins, different pieces of jewelry, do some air testing to see where targets fall to get an idea what and where targets come in at. As fore the target that disappeared might have been a pull tab or aluminum foil that floated away. Been there done that before! Good luck and post some pictures of your finds.
P.S.
I enjoy reading your knowledge on the GPS forum

Most nails come from old fire pits. Many beaches allowed fires at one time and sufers still like to start them using crates. Heavy stuff settle to a depth of equal weight.... unless it comes to rest on a larger object or hard pan. Targets that have surface like coins moves.... targets like rings may not unless there is significant turblance. You will notice target lines by doing an S patter on the sand..... as you dig targets you can look back and see where the target line is. There may be several..... waters edge, 10 ft from water, low water line, high water line and towel line. Targets like pull tabs or very light can slaw may tell you to move further toward the water. Some also say like object of simular weight move/settle together. Thats why on occassion you find more than one gold ring. Spots you should be looking for that may tell you if you are going to find gold is hard pack...... if your feet sinks as the water moves over your feet, you can bet gold if very deep there and you may not be able to reach. Once you learn you beach you will find there are locations that just produces repeatly based on the season. Digging in the OAT MEAL is hard it takes time to learn. What i do is make a good scoop if it moved.... give it a min. sometimes it moves back to the middle of the hole. If you are using an RTG fully inclosed scoop FLOATER targets like pennies are forced out as the scoop fills with sand..... you can chance them for several scoops.
