The groundskeeper was "right".....

JimmyCT

Well-known member
In my other post http://www.findmall.com/read.php?21,1509631 the groundskeeper had made the statement, "Why are you wasting your time here? this place has been picked clean and there is nothing left." I believe what he must of meant is that there is nothing around the tree I was hunting lol When I returned early Friday afternoon, I made sure I parked right next to where all the maintenance workers park their private vehicles :) Although not spectacular finds, I was overly impressed in the little area that I hit. The area was right beyond where the groundskeeper had stopped on his bobcat loader to talk to me. Besides the clad that was lying all over the top of the ground (mainly pennies) I pulled a 1919, 1925, 1936-D, 1941, 1952, 1958-D, 1940, 1947, 195? (to crusty to tell) wheat cents. I then pulled a beautiful 1917 mercury dime. All very shallow (unbelievable at an inch or less - it still baffles me how these coins were missed) the 1919 wheat was approx 6-7 inches. I also found a neat coin stamped 50 SVERIGE ORE dated 2006.

Moral of the story - don't listen to people ( I include myself in this) that claim an area has been cleaned out. Especially from the groundskeeper that maintains the park and offers a better area to detect. BigCatDaddy stated the groundskeeper "shined me" LOL that he did, but I learned really quick of his motive. Thanks for looking - Jim

This is what I like to see and hear of those area people say you are wasting your time as it has been hit many times and nothing left, I tell them good as they got the new coins and trash out of the way and I can now get serious and get the good stuff that is left, then go on to prove it. I just wish that happened every time, but sometimes you don't find squat either and it is fun to try anyway. If the area is old chance are you will find coins and other good targets others have missed as most detectors tell you what to dig and what not too, but the Sovereign give you the info and lets you decide what to dig and what not too.
I am very happy to hear you are seeing why many of us love our Sovereigns and I am sure you will too now that you getting to know your Sovereign, just remember you will learn more too from the use of it.

Good Luck and congratulation on some nice finds in a area others have detected.

Nice Merc ! Sounds like Grounds keeper Bob needs to work on his amature hour attempt as a con man ! Kinda like when someone says "no" , you cant search their yard , because they "have no interest in what might be buried out there !". Then you see them out in the yard with a walmart special metal detector on the following weekend.

Rick I agree I really like the GT its the best detector I have ever owned, I feel very confident with it . but I am intrested in a GPX 4800 for farm fields, and Jim just think that dime could have been a 1916-D comon" it could have been. and it is in great shape and worth what 4.00 at least great find, you know somtimes when they fill a spot they may fill it with old fill and even if it was hunted out it becomes new i searched just such a spot down about 8" were aluminum cans all over the place but they filled it with old dirt , it is a common custom with excavators to scrape off the top soil and put it in a pile and then use it for top soil again or in another spot maybe thats what happened but in that fill over the aluminum cans i found a 1898 V nickle thanks for posting the great find and i look forward to the 14k ring that must be lurking in thear

Yes, I am really becoming "a part of" the detector, an "extension" if you will of the electronics. Yes, I love the technology of the sovereign. What blows my mind is the depth of the coins being found. They are very shallow in a well hunted park. A city of 60,000 plus people with plenty of detectorists scanning the city property for the past 50 plus years and coins like this are an inch to an inch and a half deep? one thing I really like is the DD coil as I feel it it covers more ground thoroughly then a concentric type coil. It certainly took some getting use to. Now, I wouldn't use anything but a DD coil. Thanks for your help Rick as you are one of several that have been coaching me along and providing tips and tricks for the Sovereign GT.

When I hear "your wasting your time" type of statement, it makes me want to hit the area even more.

Your statement that I placed in BOLD is the type of detector that I had before the GT. Needless to say, I rarely ever dug a nickel and very few rings. Pulltabs and foils were also rarely found as my meter registered the word foil or pulltab - I just didn't dig. Now, I am digging nickels all the time. I am also digging even some type of foils and other low tones (usually part of a pulltab) as they sound so smooth and "even" (Soon or later (hopefully sooner ) I am going to find a nice piece of jewelry) now that I am concentrating on both spectrums. This detector makes me work (lots more digging ) more then my other detector ever did. Personally, this is the best purchase I ever made in a detector. - Jim

Nice finds Jim!!!!
Looks like a mirror image of my finds yesterday except for the dates and the number of wheats.. you beat me!!!
That "ore" coin is probably Noreigen ( I don't know if I spelled that right ).
I found one a couple of years ago and it had some kind of mammal on one side and I think it was dated 1958 or 1968.
I can't remember the denomination of it though.
Sounds like you are on a very good spot to make those nice finds so shallow in the ground.
That's unusual for a public site.
Keep up the great finds and posts,
Felix

Thanks Felix,

but I didn't "beat you" I motivated you :) Yes, it is strange that the finds are very shallow and were "throwing me off" as I thought they were newer coins being so close to the surface. As far as the ORE coin it has a picture of three crowns on the other side.

Hey Gunnar,

I didn't realize how much a 1916-D merc dime was worth lol. I looked and saw one on feebay and they wanted $20,000 or B.O. lol I wish them good luck in getting it. Next time I see the groundskeeper,(there are several) & (not slick willy) I am going to find out what they did with all the sand they dredged from the swimming area. That would be nice if I located a 14K ring lol. With the amount of people in our local parks, I am hopeful to come across a nice ring one of these days....

I have to say he was pretty convincing. Though once I got down to the other park, I knew I had been scammed lol.

Hey they made fun of me because I was detecting in the farm field, but after i found a 1905, 1926, and a 1948 silver quarter and A Indian head cent 1901 they kept quiet. then asked the questions how did they get thear the fackt is this robert kennidy could have lost his ring in the park on a campane think about that it really is a potluck somtimes tabs and somtimes gold that is fabbs

Hey Gunnar,

not quite sure who was making fun of you detecting the farm but coins and goodies (as you know) are lost all over. Who knows who was standing where - doing what - 100 + years ago? I don't. You are right RK very well could of lost his ring in the park. This whole hobby is "potluck" based. like you said, somtimes we hit it good, sometimes we don't. Like the groundskeeper telling me I am not going to find anything because it has been cleaned out lol. I hope he doesn't quit his day job. Since you found these type of coins on the farm, it only tells me there is more there. Keep plugging along...more will be revealed.

Happy hunting.

Thanks Beachbat for the ID. Yep, that is a very long way from home! Yes, I have a feeling more is still in this park.
