Been surfing some UK Sovereign forums. Interesting to get a different perspective from over seas on how guys set up and use the Sovereign and such, and unique perspectives on other things like the SEF coils and so on. Anyway, noticed a theme that I've seen in this forum in the past. Some guys swear that to get best depth they like to run the volume about about 2/3rds full. Any higher and some say the audio gets "flat" or loses some details. I suspect that's more due to headphones being overwhelmed and not something internal in the machine. But, as some of us have read in the past straight from some techs at Minelab they say to run volume at full blast to insure maximum depth and then adjust it to a comfortable level on the volume control on your headphones so surface blasts don't kill you. My $20 Sony Studio Phones have great audio, best I've used on a detector, and I like how comfortable and light they are being about 1/2 the size of full size headphones, and also don't make my ears sweat as bad on hot summer days. But they have no volume control on them so I have to keep the volume control on the GT all the way down to avoid surface stuff blasted me. At lowest volume on the GT even super deep stuff at the fringes I don't seem to have any trouble easily hearing, but still I wonder if I might be missing a tiny bit of depth like Minelab implied? I've tested this by swinging over a coin from far away and getting closer until the GT first starts to react to it and seem to be able to easily hear that very first reaction of the machine, but still I wonder. I really should make a limiter circuit for these headphones and so it wouldn't be an issue to worry about, because then I could blast the GT's volume full blast and surface stuff's volume will be limited by the limiter to a comfortable level. I guess that's one of the reasons why many Sovereign owners like the Sunray Pro Golds. Not only do they have a limiter, but they also have individual ear volume controls.
Anyway, opinions on max volume for max depth, or on the 2/3rds full volume thing seeming to get better audio detail than full blast for some of you?
