The Great Salt Lake

I have hunted it or I should say I tried. Lots of salt. I hunted mostly around the Old Saltair amusement complex. I used three different detectors without much luck. Since I moved away from that area I have not been back to try my Beach Hunter ID or MXT. I am sure there are those that live in the area they may have had better results than I did. Hummmm. I would have thought you might have found SOMETHING at the
amusement park. When you say you tried three different detectors, you mean they all
reacted radically? What detectors did you use?

I would think with all the history surrounding the Great Salt Lake, there must be
some real treasures/relics in the ground.

I'll have to see if there are any detecting clubs there (I'd imagine there are) and see
what they have to say.

I did not say I did not find anything I just said I did not have much luck. Most everything I found was so eaten up from the salt that it was next to impossible to see what I had found. I was using Garrett machines at the time and as in any area with high mineralization its difficult to hunt. Unless you know something I don't, There are a number of clubs in the Salt Lake area that may be able to show you how to hunt it. Good luck. HH Dennis in Idaho

Contact "Chucks Detectors and Prospecting supplies" He is a great guy and should be able to clue you in to some good places. When i lived there,he told me about Maryelen gulch (back in my dredging days). He is an avid detectorist.

Probably not my place to brag about someone else's finds but, I have a friend that scored a $20 gold and five Morgans from the old Saltair resort years ago. He used a sovereign. Access is not good. According to the harbor-master at the State Park, the woman who owns the land is considering easing up but, it is fenced from the road. The hike from the marina is about a mile to the east where some old timber from the piers can still be found. I have detected around the new saltair structure. There are summer concerts at the beach and it it loaded with salt corroded clad and a little jewelery. One other note, the brine flies are relentless!

I just got a reply from a gut in Utah:

I don't know what this refers to and wrote back for an explanation.

Looks like some of the guys use Whites Mds.

Just got a reply back: the old salt air spot is a two or three mile track. There does not at
this time seem to be restrictions on the rest of the Lake. Some people also use Tesoros
there as well as MineLab. Lower end machines don't seem to do as well I'm told.

I am surprised that you don't hit some of the mining (ghost)towns up there. The wasatch and oqurrih(sp) mountians have hundreds of places the Uinta's too.I lived in midvale and murray from 94 to 98 and visited (prospected) all over the place. Just stay away from the Headframes, that is inviting danger.
