The Friendly Butcher....

I was driving down the street last week in our sleepy little town when I looked over and saw a monument on its way down. After all these years, the O. K. Coral, (alias The Friendly Butcher), was being torn down single handedly by one man and a machine. It was then that I thought to myself that I had better write a story and get a picture while I could. Today when I left for work, I was armed with my camera.
This super market was very high tech for Benton and all of Saline County back in the 60s. Why heck, it probably had 10 aisles and in fact, it had 3 check out registers, but of course only 3 were ever used at one time. Next to the registers was J. W. Willis

I spent a lot of time in that place. It had AIR CONDITIONING, you know!!!!

It brings back memories of our local mom and pop store. When I was a young kid that was all there was.
I remember going to the store with my mother and always hoping she would get a chicken. Back then you bought the things with pin feathers on them, which my mom would singe off on the gas stove or pull with pliers and the dang things would still have guts in them.
The way I remember that was the fact that my brothers and I would take turns for the biggest egg, if there was any when she cleaned the thing. Most of the time, as I remember, there would probably be one full egg with its shell and then a bunch of yolks, progressivly smaller.
When it was my turn at the egg, I would get the full egg but mom would still fry up all the little yolks for us. It was a treat.
When we were kids and would go to the store my mother would have a list. As we entered the store the old lady that owned the store or one of here help would take the list and fill the order. I had forgotten all about that! That sure stopped when the A$P opened up in town.
That was the biggest store I had ever seen and by todays standards it was tiny. They had a huge varity of produce and I was amazed. A few years ago I drove past the old building and was amazed how small it was.
My best friend at the time was Dave and his parents owned a store. They also had donuts and about once a month mom would let me buy a couple donuts, day old of course. We never had fresh but that was what milk was for
That reminds me of a story of smashing rats at the store but that will be another story. I had not thought about that for years.
You brought back some fond memories!! Thanks

along with Huckaby's, I remember this place, along with the smaller mom and pop stores, I helped as a helper deliver from Sturat's whoesalers from local town I live close to now.....
early 60's, and how did he make that hambuger meat allways look like he has just put it out?

other day, but thought I'd better write about Cactus Vick first.
I also remember getting day old doughnuts at Bushes Drug store with a fountain coke in a real "coca cola glass" to wash it down with! Seems like the doughnuts were a nickel a piece.
Lets here about the rats!

burned down on The Bauxite Highway leaving one in the Tull community, one in the Salem community, and one by the Arkansas Health Cntr on 167.

I was right there with you again. You didn't mention stealing almond joy candy bars and going to the bathroom and eating it. I remember mother tearing your butt up good for that one. You didn't have the finesse I had, walking back and forth by the grapes, and chucking one in my mouth each time. I remember the ladies, and the people, but your memory of this was really astounding. Why, I hadn't thought about Mildred in years!
Thanks for taking me with on this venture down memory lane! It was great! But why did it put tears in my eyes?
ILY, Linda

Military road too. That's where I bought all my 45 records with the latest tunes on them, and mom sometimes shopped there too!

but do not remember much about the inside layout of the stores for we delived to the back doors and after checking our deliveries we were gone from there---usually had more stops than we could do from daylight to dark thirty for minm wage

this was the stop we made right at lunchtime...for they back then had a snack bar and made the best chili dogs.....with onions, hot peppers, for 25 cents, if I remember correctly......but, it might have been for them twin blonde sisters that worked there one summer

I know I'm datin' my little ole self, but....
it was a Piggly Wiggley!
I tried to find a good photo of the Friendly Butcher in one of my ole HS annuals, but no dice. But there is one of Sheppards in there...and the Dairy Queen!
Good stuff, Thomas, you Almond Joy-eatin' little devil!
