The Flutey or Warbling Sound, what setting do you use for Varibility???

I can hear it on the Emulator but not on my E-Trac after the first 20 Hrs of use. I've been running my varibility at 28 and know the scream of a screw cap. What setting do I need to adjust???

What setting are you running now?

Don't know anything about the Emulator but I don't hear the Pied Piper's piccolo unless I am in multi-tones conductive in a real trashy place running all metal?

Conductive multitone with varibility at 28 -30 and you need to adjust the threshold pitch up or down to get the high silver tone that sounds best to your ears with your head phones of choice. The threshold pitch also sets the target tone pitches....
I think I run mine around 23 if I remember correct and I use Sunray Pro Gold phones that really sing on high silver hits.

Now Ray...I've found a bit of silver with the E-Trac, but I tell you I can not distinguish the sound from a clad quarter at 5-6" and a silver quarter at the same depth. I use the sunray Pro's too. I hear you guys talk about it all the time, but I haven't ever heard it. What am I missing??? I know my ears work perfectly well because I have them tested every year. I have my variablility set at 29 and my threshold pitch is 29 as well.
It would be helpful if someone could take a video in their garden with settings and show the difference. I've tried it before but haven't been able to make it happen. thanks.

Ray-Mo - Thanks for the tip. I upped my threshold pitch just now while testing in the house to 23 from 15. It made a big big difference. (I don't like the higher threshold though.) I also upped my variability to 30 from 29 and that also helps to have silver stand out.

I'm using Gray Ghosts and also have a pair of Chef Phones (UK headphones). The Chef phones are very quiet and smooth but just can't get the highs like the Gray Ghosts, even when I max the volume. Funny, on CO numbers around 30 they blast, but not on CO 45! These must have really been made for UK hunters that are going for lower to mid range CO numbered targets. I will go back to my Gray Ghosts now, a bit noisier but they hit the highs higher. 8 years old, perhaps they need some servicing?

Thx,
Alberrt

I prefer about the factory setting on threshold tone,30 veriability,I tried to increase the threshold tone and it seemed to me to be a little harder to hear that different sweet tone when the tone is that high in overall response,I prefer a wider range of distinguishable audio tones on the high end with the threshold barely audible, mole

Ray, I'm using Conductive/Multi Threshold Pitch 26 Volume limit 29 Gain 26 Normal
Variability 29 Limits30. Also use the Gold Pro HP with Limit switch up for ON and the Mode switch UP for stero Right ear volume switch set at 7pm Left ear set at 9pm My Sensitivity usually runs auto +3 at 19 to 22

Great Tread !!!!! let see some personal settings.

I use a varibilty of 29, and adjust threshold pitch pretty high, makes silver scream out. Barberdan.....threshold pitch and threshold level, two different things!

I know Goes....my threshold level is pretty low, can't stand the constant buzzing. I use the same settings as you but I still can't tell the difference between a clad quarter and a silver quarter.....or even a copper penny and silver dime...lol. They all make the same sounds when they hit.

what a great machine that it can be set up to sound just the way anyone person likes it

threshold level 15-16
vol limit 29
vol gain 25
tone multi
sounds conduct 99% of the time
variability 27
limits 30
thres pitch 12 i tried higher but then silver sounded like someone was pushing a hot poker through my head :punch: plus having the threshold low is easier to listen to for long periods.

works for me and don't like to mess with it unless its very necessary time hearing the same sounds is what detecting is all about if i keep changing them it sort of defeats the purpose?

thanks for sharing what works for you its a interesting read.

I have those setting and really can't tell the difference.

Here is something I have been wondering. From what I understand, VDI readings are independent of audible tone readings. Is the higher sound due to silver dime being more condutive than a clad dime? A silver Roosevelt will register a 12-46 on VDI while a Clad dime registers 12-43 to 12-44, so it should be a higher pich as well. Any additional clarity or roundness in tone or warbling I can see as an indicator of silver, but wouldn't pitch just go along with it being more conductive? What you should really listen for is sound quality not pitch, right?

I agree with you Ryan, I've found that a coin has a solid hit sound as well as a more clear sound where as trash is somewhat broken. I also thought the E-Trac would be more of a musical note like like on the Emulator, its easy to tell the difference
between all three pennies. I think I also perfer variability 23 or24 better as far as tone. Remember All the junk metal in CLAD which should chang the numbers and tone. look how much copper is in a quarter Now and almost no silver left in it today,
same way with the new penny no copper
