The Fine Points of Cherry Picking

I have two trashy fields to go over..One may have been hit, the other gave up a bunch of clad in just a few minutes of playing around..I am going to use the Vaquero, so I expect that Dave will have some ideas on the specifics for this machine..However, this type of searching has its own rules that may or may not work..I don't think you just set the sensitivity on High and go whipping across the ground like the Red Queen in Alice and Wonderland..Years ago, I was out with a Fisher right after two Discriminator machines worked over the field. The guys were sitting on a bank enjoying watching me dig dry holes..Number 100 was a huge gold college ring that might fit on a thumb that was hit once or twice with a board...What are techniques that you have used? Coil, height, speed, settings, Even for such a simple procedure, there can be a lot of variables .....cordially NAD

Strangely enough, I've had my best luck while cherry picking.

When I go to a new site I use basic settings, but let my feet do the guiding. Although we do go back and find a few goodies, for the most part I find the best in the first 30 minutes or so.

When cherry picking I watch my VDI(DFX) for 18-21, 79, 81-82, and 84 and above. 18-21 will be nickles and most gold rings, 79, if the depth is right, will be wheats, 81-82 will be silver dimes and rings, 84 will be clad quarters 87 will be silver quarters.

Hay Nad,

If you want gold, you'll have to set the disc no higher than
foil. At that setting, you will lose a lot of small gold. To get
even real small gold or chains, you will need even less disc.

The notion that most gold rings hit like a nickle is wrong.

Only larger rings hit like that.

Pendants, ear rings, most women's rings along with toe
rings, chains and so on probably would be in the foil to
pull tab range. Larger gold can hit like a penny sometimes.

So, as much sens and as little disc as you can stand is
how I go about it.

Coins are easy. Unless you want max depth or nickles.

Discrimination reduces depth sensitivity and changes the
response characteristics.

I use the response characteristics to ID targets, so adding
disc takes that away.

Just disc out clad pennys and you get copper coins, silver
and clad dimes and quarters.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog
