That's me, fickled. Always looking for a different machine. Looking for that edge, the small advantage over the next guy ( I mean my hunting partners, hehe). Little did I know that they had the lead on me all the time, snickering under their breath, witnessing me going from this detector to that one, and so on, all the while they are putting the goodies in their treasure pouches. They have x-terra 50's. I had everything under the sun, fiddling with this knob or that button, trying to tweak this or that. Well no more...................!!! That persistant inner voice finally won out and I got myself an X-terra 70. I gotta say, it's one slick detector, and it just feels so good in my hands. Everything about it brings out the confidence in me once again in the field. I like the threshhold, cause thats what i cut my teeth on. I like the auto features. I like being able to jump modes without jumping thru hoops. Hey, I like the whole dang thing! Thanks to all on this forum for the input to help me decide on a great detector. And Digger, thanks for the personal conversation.
My first outting with it was yesterday. My friend Alabama (nickname), and I hit a corn field with an old, old school still standing in the corn stubble. In the past we have come out of there with some IH's, two cent pieces and etc. Not an abundance of goodies at any particular time, but just the thought of gettin' something old keeps us going back whenever possible. This time Alabama and his x-50 got a thick gold wedding band five inches down. Don't know if its solid gold or a composite metal with it, cause it registered at #36 ID. It has a sodder joint in the band as if it was cut to size, or perhaps thats how they were made way back when. He also got a fairly nice buffalo nickle. Eh, that's enough bragging for him, now it's my turn.
I knew with my new x-70 I was the favored gun slinger in this corn field battle. Heck. I even let my buddy use the 70 for awhile just to let em know what he was up against. Bad move on my part. He didn't want to let go of it. I'd say, within the next 2 to 4 wks, he'll have one too. As i said though, bad move on my part. I got jinxed. My take for the five hour excursion............................................. a few shotgun firing rings, a couple of pulltabs, a handfull of shredded aluminum or steel can slaw, and a variety of copper doodads. That's it! Was i mad.......no, not at all. Was I disappointed................just a little bit, (only because we all want to get at least one keeper when we go out). The good thing about using this machine and why i'm not flustered is because I knew about 90% of the time I was able to guess-tamate whether i would be pulling something good from the ground just by the audio and the id. There's not much foolin the user, and I like that too. It's just a matter of time, and my buddies will be buying the beers instead of me. Great machine. Thanks for reading.
