The Fickled Detectorist

That's me, fickled. Always looking for a different machine. Looking for that edge, the small advantage over the next guy ( I mean my hunting partners, hehe). Little did I know that they had the lead on me all the time, snickering under their breath, witnessing me going from this detector to that one, and so on, all the while they are putting the goodies in their treasure pouches. They have x-terra 50's. I had everything under the sun, fiddling with this knob or that button, trying to tweak this or that. Well no more...................!!! That persistant inner voice finally won out and I got myself an X-terra 70. I gotta say, it's one slick detector, and it just feels so good in my hands. Everything about it brings out the confidence in me once again in the field. I like the threshhold, cause thats what i cut my teeth on. I like the auto features. I like being able to jump modes without jumping thru hoops. Hey, I like the whole dang thing! Thanks to all on this forum for the input to help me decide on a great detector. And Digger, thanks for the personal conversation.
My first outting with it was yesterday. My friend Alabama (nickname), and I hit a corn field with an old, old school still standing in the corn stubble. In the past we have come out of there with some IH's, two cent pieces and etc. Not an abundance of goodies at any particular time, but just the thought of gettin' something old keeps us going back whenever possible. This time Alabama and his x-50 got a thick gold wedding band five inches down. Don't know if its solid gold or a composite metal with it, cause it registered at #36 ID. It has a sodder joint in the band as if it was cut to size, or perhaps thats how they were made way back when. He also got a fairly nice buffalo nickle. Eh, that's enough bragging for him, now it's my turn.
I knew with my new x-70 I was the favored gun slinger in this corn field battle. Heck. I even let my buddy use the 70 for awhile just to let em know what he was up against. Bad move on my part. He didn't want to let go of it. I'd say, within the next 2 to 4 wks, he'll have one too. As i said though, bad move on my part. I got jinxed. My take for the five hour excursion............................................. a few shotgun firing rings, a couple of pulltabs, a handfull of shredded aluminum or steel can slaw, and a variety of copper doodads. That's it! Was i mad.......no, not at all. Was I disappointed................just a little bit, (only because we all want to get at least one keeper when we go out). The good thing about using this machine and why i'm not flustered is because I knew about 90% of the time I was able to guess-tamate whether i would be pulling something good from the ground just by the audio and the id. There's not much foolin the user, and I like that too. It's just a matter of time, and my buddies will be buying the beers instead of me. Great machine. Thanks for reading.

Another Happy Camper.

Glad you found the X-70 to be a "good fit". Sounds like you are well on your way to a great spring, hunting those fields. Keep us posted with your finds. HH Randy

Congrats on the new detector! I want to wish you good luck with it and hope you find a bunch of stuff, Beale.

well now If im not mistaking the x50 and 70 will do the same performance on said ground, and the 50 has one less pattern..Is that right..other than that In reality the x50 and 70 should be equal on that playing field you described..throwing that out there because Im torn between x50 and 70 on my next purchase....only because 70 will prospect and offers one more disc pattern..???

As far as I know, you are right on the 50 and 70 being equal in depth,at least that's what I have read. I was just telling a story about how I was gonna kick my hunting partner in the pants. I was razzing him, trying to make him think I had somethimg special. Just some friendly competition between us. As it was, it didn't work out in my favor, especially after he showed me the ring and his ear to ear grin. I do like the 70 much better than his 50, just due to all the extras it has. You wouldn't be unhappy if you upgraded that's for sure. My opinion anyways. Good luck with your hunts, and by your posts, you seem to be doing very well. It is not to often one finds a place like your hunting.

Truth is did not find much with the 70..maybe just the hunting sites..You have to go over it to find it....

Good luck with the 70 Krazyglue.
I think all the X-Terra's are great coin hunters. I've had the 30 since they came out, but bought the 70 myself yesterday. You have the low frequency coil available to you that the 50 can't use. Reading Digger's posts about it over time seems to indicate their value for the type of hunting that you are doing. You also have the prospecting mode and the 99 tones available to you which with time and experience, give you an edge in some situations, but your mates are going to keep you honest, because like I said; all the X-Terra's a very good and some underestimate the abilities of the 30 and the 50 compared to the 70.
All the best with it.
Mick Evans.

Yea Mike, thanks for the input. I've had numerous other detectors over the past 8 yrs, with my favorite being the MXT, (which I still like alot). The weight and the noise tended to get the best of me though. The x-Terras' are much more quieter and lighter that's for sure. Now I'm just curious as to whether the 70 will get the 7 to 9 inch dime. When that happens, I know I have a keeper machine. From reading what others have experienced with it in depth, it's just a matter of time, hopefully.

I'd be quietly confident that it could hit a dime at that range. I'd say that at 9 inches, you'd be pretty much maxed out on though, although you do have the prospecting mode will will increase your depth. you just want have any discrimination though (apart from iron).
I had seriously considered buying the MXT instead of the X-Terra 70, but the cost was the main deal killer for me. Here in Oz, they retail for AUD $1500 and I would have to spend another $300 on a DD coil for nugget hunting. the 70 with the 5x10 coil was about $500 cheaper. taking the weight into the equation as well as my prior experience with the 30, made the 70 the logical choice.
I guess we will have the pleasure of learning the 70 at the same time.
Have fun with it.
Mick Evans.
