Basic Obedience including the Down-Stay serves many purposes.

As "pack leader" the dogs' attention should ALWAYS be focused on you in the open outdoors for many reasons including safety. This can get interesting when you train several dogs at once who have differing ages and levels of experience. The trick is keeping a positive mood and attitude while never losing "dominance". Goldens are very easy, however, since they truly want to please their humans and are always eager to learn.

Getting the dog's attention is primary before any command. This is a target-focus game. As you can see, seven year old Holly is much more "focused" than our puppy, TJ.

After having been sitting, the dogs focus on the "Mark" of the target to be retrieved. They then bolt toward the target (even if it can't be seen) after the release command.

Although Holly is getting older now, she STILL beats all the others to the target and gets the retrieve. For this reason. We use this to excite the other dogs and then give them solo time to make the retrieves on their own without the competition.

While traing with Danny, TJ & Holly are content to wait their turn, knowing everyone gets a "go".
