The Eternal Seeker (Long)

After reading many queries on many forums about why do we MD, how did we start and what would be our dream find, I too find myself curious. The answer to why we join these forums is easy, for me it was to seek out others who like me Love this hobby, of course.
As to why I MD, a deep Love of history which was instilled in me by my parents, which is also the answer as to how started. While we dont all seek the same thing,we are all searching for something someone else has lost .Some of us relic hunt, others coin shoot while others seek out gold and silver from the beaches. My passion is relics , and upon holing my latest find in my hand, I wonder who might have held it last, what did it mean to them and how was it lost. When I hunted near the battlefields and found 3-ringers I always would think did it hit it's mark? Did it mean death for one while life for another ? When you find that old silver coin from a time gone by when so much could have been bought with it, Do you ever wonder if loosing it meant a family did without necessities ? Or was it just dropped from the pocket of a child out playing . When you find a wedding band on the beach, do you wonder if it was lost by a carefree newly wed . Or was it flung into the deep by a poor broken hearted soul.
As to dream find, I dont have an answer, because if I did and I ever found it that might mean an end to my eternal seeking....And I never want that to end. With that said and a free weekend coming up, I am going out and seeking whatever lies in the next hole, HH Everyone !!!

what a profound post, i must say. very good. i reckon we all metal detect for different reasons. i enjoy history too, and love anything old or antique, and being outdoors. so, at a very young age [12] i put the three together and put the coil to the soil and commenced to strokin'! man, what a great time i've had. i feel like i've lived five lifetimes with all the history and revealed secrets i've discovered and held in my hands. thanks, and hh,

Oh, Terri you must have read my mind a number of times. Sometimes I hold something I have found and try to imagine the person that lost it. I wonder if it was a real tragic lose or an accidental lose that didn't mean much. Sometimes I think I should put it back because maybe it was meant to be lost and maybe it should stay lost?....Z

Exactly Zee, I knew I was not the only one. And as for staying lost, Ive thrown a ring
in the ocean, with all the negative energy that came with that puppy....It should really
stay lost :look:

Terri

Oh no I had that happen and that ring felt ugly, dark and evil. I chucked it as far as I could into the lake.
When I find a nice piece of jewelry I would rather give it back to the owner than to have it in my glass covered box. It kind of has no real meaning to me. It is jewelry that I can sell or give away but nothing personal about it. I am not much of a collector. I use what I need and try not to get much more than I need.....Z

I knew you would understand, the things we find had meaning . Out of all the old coins
I have found over the years, the ones with the hole in them are most special, someone
actually thought enough of them to wear them, I Love those most of all, some view them
as damaged, I see them a treasures . Great Post Ghost, you are so right it has been
like living several lifetimes through the finds we make

Terri

I am very new to the hobby. I grew up with a history loving father. We used to arrowhead hunt the fields back home. I moved on to hunting bottles as a teenager. I only took up metal detecting a year ago. I also find myself wondering about the stuff I find! How was it lost and why. I will say I do not do this with clad but with the other items. It is a great hobby, I do wish I had started a bit earlier in my life, Beale.

Sometimes I wish I was rich.

But then, I understand that I would not appreciate metal detecting any more
because I could buy any coin, relic or what ever I wanted.

But that would be a tragety.

I would no longer descover the thought provoking items that belonged to those
who were here before us.

I am not a well educated person. But the things I learn about the past become
alive when I can hold the treasures in my hand.

A rich man is missing out if he can't enjoy the priceless things in life.

Happy Hunting,

Tabdog

Good Post TD . But I think that even if you could buy any coin or
relic, like me they would not mean as much to you as the ones you
had found . There is something special in that

Hi Echostar61:

I don't think we will ever stop seeking. To stop implies something has gone static and I don't
see the universe as static but ever expanding outward. The infinite/eternal seems built into the
universe. Like you say, we are all looking for something. God help us if we ever find it because then
we have nothing left to reach for. No disrespect to those out there who are patiently ( or impatiently) waiting
for Heaven, but personally I can do without it. A place "where neither dust nor rust corrupts" doesn't interest
me in the slightest! Sometimes I too grow tired and wish the world would stop so I could rest. The world
will neither stop nor slow down for me or anyone else, but then rest is a state of mind and not a "destination" out
there. The same goes for "heaven" in my opinion.
Keep swinging that detector!

Take time to smell the flowers!

For me...it's about feeling at peace with everything if even for just that very short time while hunting. It's kind of like when I get the Harley out.....I seem to forget any stress or worries while the wind is blowing in my face. There's also the other side to it...I was hooked back in the 70's when I dug my first indian head:thumbup:

Thank You Bryce .... I have been thinking about you and hoping you are finding
some relief and peace in your life :cheekkiss:

Nicely put.

Carl Sagan, Scientist and writer once said, "We are made of Stardust." We are made from the stuff the stars are made of. Another writer latched
onto that expanding it by saying, "We ARE the Universe, learning about itself." To fully appreciate that we have to be alone (maybe on our Harley)
and just be and feel for a short time what it feels like to be the universe. We are not all as seperate as we imagine, but thank GOD we can't read each other's minds!LOL

BTW
In case anyone is wondering, I am a GUY cat.
Someone on the Forum keeps refering to me as Girl!

Almost all of us could buy the things we find, and in much better shape. It's never been about the value. I agree with everyone, it's about the history, the part about being alive, the thrill of discovery, the peace we attain while hunting, and the never ending journey. Life is much, much better with detecting. And yes Tabdog, some rich people don't know what they are missing. Too bad for them. It's all too evident in our present economy how rich folks act when their lively hood is in trouble. Just don't let them mess with our detecting lively hood:biggrin: Peace and good luck to everyone. HH

I had an experience at a location of a tunnel that was built with foreign labor and had some tragedy associated with it. There was an area above the tunnel that looked good, so I went up there, and it was a gorgeous site. But when I started to detect, I got a very angry feeling, like I was trespassing or more like I was disrespecting the land. I soon realised that it was not connected with the death of any one, but more like a sacred Indian spot. I told my wife who was also detecting down below, and she said she went up there earlier and was not comfortable there, so she immediately moved on. There are somethings in life that only our spiritual side can see, and that was one of them for me!!

Great Post Coinnut :please: I have went into abandonded homes at sites and
could feel in some the anger if you will and others in the middle of feb. a warmth.
I think maybe what we leave behind is an imprint of negative or positive energy, that
our spititual side can sense.
