I havent found any ,...and was wondering where they might hit....I had a few in my old coins at my moms house so i popped one down to see where they might hit on the meter......and nothing nada zip.....the elite dont hit a steel penny......period...no disc, no notch no sound whatsoever on the steel penny.....I was wondering if anyone else has found this to be true...also was pretty suprised at the varience beteew real early wheats...some 176 some 174 some 177,some 180....I kinda knew about that but not the steel penny,,,,,I would like some thoughts..........:D

Just like the name says "steel Penny" as these are rejected with the Sovereign as it hate iron.
We used to see a few of these before disc were out, plus we get a few when these are in the same hole as other coins are,but will be a differnt signal. I just talk to a guy that got one today, but it was with other coins.
About 3 years ago i was testing a Tesoro Lobo Super trac in one of my well worked parks and the only coins i found were 3 of the steel pennies, but they were very rusty.

On the Wheaties I notice most will read the 179-180, but there is one in the 40s and beleive it is the 44 that will read the 176-177 and the early wheaties in the teens also will read 176-177 and wonder if the compostion is the same as the IH penny which it and the new zinc pennies read the same.

Not even a null??

The pennies you checked probably still had the zinc coating intact. This is not going to happen in the dirt, as the zinc will rot away pretty fast leaving just a rusty piece of steel.

Know about target averaging?? On an intact steel penny (still has zinc coating) you will have the combinaton ferrous and non-ferrous in possibly the right porportions to cancel each other out. The coin becomes invisible.
