Hauled the Eagle II SL along today for some in town junk-ets. Hal had the fever to hit some cleared lots around town so after the obligatory whining from me, away we went. We didnt find much, and were dogged by some bad luck, to boot.
Hal it seemed had traded off his beach sweeper coil for a sniper coil on the Golden. Okay, that seems like a good thing, I guess. But when he turned on the detector, it gave out an ear piercing squeal loud enough to wake the dead.
"Hal, plug the heapdphones into that thing!" I hollered. "You wanna get every wino and crackhead in the neighborhood over here?!" I eyed the bunch of boozy corner-loungers we'd seen as we drove up. They seemed to have forgotten about us once we got out of eyesight. It looked like they hadn't heard the racket, either.
"Something's wrong with this thing! I hope it aint my detector." He was shaking the Golden and waving it around in the air.
"Well, did it do that at home, when you tested it out?" Blank stare - dead silence - crickets chirping....
"You did test it first, didn't you?" I asked.
"Well, uh, no. The guy said it was a good one."
"Oh good grief (or words to that affect)! Man, you gotta be SURE of your equipment, bro."
"Well, danged! so much for this hunt," he said.
"Naw, man, just use my Vaquero." I had brought it along, hoping to use the small coil it was fitted with - now Hal could use it.
Moral: ALWAYS test your gear before you leave home.
SO we hit the lot, me and the Eagle and Hal with the V. I found an astonishing number of screwcaps and herring tins, surprising as the lot LOOKED like it had the first 3" of topsoil scraped off at some point. I did find a cheap bracelet and a few cents but that was it.
I found that the Eagle seems to perform pretty well in the preset modes and the more I wanna fool with the advanced controls... the more I seem to mess it up. I started in my "custom" program and ended up in the preset modes in a pretty short time. Maybe once I get Daryl T's shortcourse on the Eagle, I can figure out all those nifty little adjustments.
Sadly, that is pretty much how the day went. A few grubby coins and a lot of trash on several cleared lots. Even our old trusty beach site turned up doodly. Well, there's always tomorrow.
Just some of the "treasure" I found...
