The Eagle Has Landed!

While yard-saleing this past weekend,I ran across an eagle II sl.I've been looking for a back-up for my xl-pro,so I went home, checked ebay prices& read some posts on here.I went back the next day & bought it for $80.I'm not real sure of the model but it has the ground balance knob on the front & u1/u2 programs and audio abc after ground balance. It's a clean machine(speaker was taped from new) but after it sits idle overnight it doesn't want to turn on.A few taps on the control box will activate it and from there it works great!I've cleaned battery contactacts and pulled the cover & checked all visable connections.Any input as to what would cause this & info on model id would be greatly appreciated. Thanks DBULL

I traded one earlier this year, for a Fisher F70. I reckoned it a more than fair trade.

At $80 you walked away with a deal... but you should have been running!

Problems turning on with a well used detector can some times be caused by broken wire strands in the earphones, in the phone plug or jack (carefully wiggle cord to find area of problem), or also be caused by broken strands in the coil connector or plug, again carefully wiggle cord at both ends to hear some kind of noise. What happens is that the movement of the coil also moves the pins in the connector a couple thousandthsw and the wires break after awhile. Be especially alert to the wiring inside the box at the socket. These connector and plug breaks can be fixed but require careful soldering and re filling fhe joints with silastic to reinforce for future usage Hope this is of help to you,,,,,,,,,good luck and good lhunting,,,,,,,,,,,How.

Sometimes when I first push the on button(but not always) it won't show a screen.I can tap lightly on the side of the box while holding the on button and it fires up and will work fine for the rest of the day.the headphones are the same ones I use with my xl-pro.However they are stereo.so I only get tone out of one side on the eagle. This machine is great on coins but the pro blows it away on small jewelry!DBULL

DBULL OK That Eagle is a 1990 and the knob up front is a Signal Balance Knob its Like a gain / Turn it up till the Whits Logo on the face blinks in N out youv overloaded the Sig so turn it back a bit till you see it solid, It is now at the peck of sensitivity, I just sent mine Back to Whites for a repair it was doing the same thing yours is doing, I tap on the box and it will power in and out , Do a inspection but mine was a Resester thay sead, I started this Hobby in 1988 with a 1988 Eagle II blue Box, My Eagle II SL 90 witch is the one you have is a fine unit one of the Best Detectors Whites made,
I have a V-3 also and still going in this great Hobby, N if you have a Question ask away I know the Eagle in and out,
Mickfin,

Apparently this machine has cured itself! It turns on first time, everytime now.I've been running in ch mode/audio c and went back over some sites I'd already covered with the pro and found coins at all of them.It also really likes minis.DBULL

Im glad it fixed itself, Its a good Detector, Mickfin

One of the reasons I puchased this detector(other than price) was because my xl-pro coils will work with it(6.59hz).It seems to be a little heavier than the pro but moving the cuff back to the end of my elbow seemed to help considerably.I still need to purchase battery pack and charger as the c cells are expensive and short lived. If someone would go through the ground balancing procedure I would greatly appreciate the information. Thanks for all the replies!! DBULL

David press the On / Off button it will start in CJ Coin / Jewely if you want to start in PP prospecting press
Audio mode, Hold the coil in the Air and sress Air you will hear a beep , Hold the Coil on the Ground not over a target?

I understand basic ground balance but I'm trying to figure out the knob on the front of the detector.Do I air tune it or hold it at ground level to adjust to where the whites logo flashes? Thanks DBULL.

I GB my Eagle 2 SL with it in the preset, then I bump it up till the logo flashes and then back it off a click till it is solid.
