The Curse of the Tin Eater!

[attachment 296072 tungsten1.jpg]....The 'Tin Eater' was discovered back in the 1700's in Sweden during the smelting process for Tin, they called it "Wolfram", and it bears the atomic symbol "W" to this day.....This strange compound devoured tin and reduced the yield, hence its name...In 1783, the Elhuyar brothers in Spain discovered a way of isolating it and putting it to 'good' use...As far as we detectorists are concerned, this is not one of them! It is just a few atomic weight and density numbers shy of pure gold, which makes it a good medium for counterfeiters to gold plate, and sell as solid gold..Its heavy! It also has the highest melting point of all the known metals.[attachment 296073 tungsten.jpg]

I discovered this Tin Eater today, got a super strong hit, in shallow water, the TID showed a 70, and a hard mid-tone signal...I knew before I started excavating it was a big ring, most likely a big gold ring, and when it was in the scoop, you can imagine my happiness and satisfaction! You can also imagine the plethora of creative and naughty utterances that shortly followed! The sand I was standing on turned to glass from the heat of my verbal causticities! ...since theres a slight SW wind, those words are now cutting a swath of deforestation somewhere NE of Muskegon..

It had me fooled right up until I could see the markings![attachment 296074 tungsten2.jpg] On my way home, I tried to sell it to the guy at the bait shop for 40 dollars...nearly had him, but from a financial standpoint, he is lacking a pot, a window, and evidently 40 dollars! Oh well, I did some research on TUNGSTEN when I got home, and now have gained a tiny bit of appreciation for it, its history and usage...its a pretty ring, I bet it cost somebody over 300 dollars...maybe I'll throw it back? Let somebody else have a heart attack like it did to me!
Mud.

NOOOOOOO Please dont throw it back. Some of us are OLD and finding a ring that size might just cause our demise from a massive Myocardial Infarction. I looked in my scoop on Friday and saw what I thought was a Large white gold ring. Got it out of the scoop and thought that it was a bit light to be gold. Could not see to read the hallmark until I got home and go the 20X loupe. Danged thing was an 8.8 gram Sterling ring.

Cool post. Too bad that she went south on you, but Tungsten is still many levels up from coated iron. That one would have my hoop tight for a while also ! The reduced expectation rings can be a real roller coaster ride. Yesterday I was fiddling around with a weaker but interesting sound under a tree. It had a bit of depth to it. As I got closer it sounded stronger (I expected an older copper as it was in an old demo'd house yard). But out popped a ring ! Wow, how surprising and cool ! Then it only took a few seconds to see that it was coated brass or copper and that the glass stones, were just that. Sure was a fun dig though. Thanks for posting up, it was interesting and informative.

Titanium, tungsten carbide, stainless steel and now tin eater!!

What's the treasure hunting world coming too!!??

Hey, that ring is still a super nice find.

Ha! Yeah, I realy dont get upset and start swearing a find as my post would lead you to believe.:lmfao:..in fact, nothing really disappoints me to the point of cussing much anymore, just to be up and outside hunting is good enough to make all finds trophys!!:please: Sure would like some big gold though, and this one had me convinced until the very last that it was!...I'm running out of year here...

Hey mud I thought I found a solid gold chain yesterday during my hunt....it was lying right on top of the ground at a local park. I was all "giddy" until I got home and realized the gold was peeling from the chain lol Win some, lose some. Back to the drawing board.

Oh man, what a beating that would be! For me, anyway. Were you on the beach or in the water?
And I don't know what you do for a living, but I think you could be a writer! You sure put all that misery in a fun and funny way, lol. " verbal causticities"....... I'm going to have to use that on my simpleton buddies. LoL, great post Mud!

I thought you'd found a stray Billy goat, Mud. I've had a poor gold year myself, but hope when they let the water down in November to rent a wetsuit and hit it hard where the old life guard stand used to be. It's in about 10-12 feet of water right now, but believe I can work it when the water is down. Sure believe there's lots of gold and silver further out. In the 1960's, we used to crowd around the lifeguard stand and dive off of it, because they never had a lifeguard that I knew of.

Thanks, Mud - I learned my thing for the day! Hope the next one's twice as big with a giant 24K stamp on the band.
