The big DD coil

A

Anonymous

Guest
I have the big dd coil from Whites (6x9 ?) and seems to me it just runs very noisy. It gives lots of false signals, lots of high silver signals, and it is just really noisy most of the time. Any suggestions. I know some of you say you love this coil but I have no luck at all with it.

Your not the first I have heard of to not like the 6x9. I heard another fella say the stock ran much smoother in heavy mineralization. I tried the 4x6 and it did okay but still couldn't run the gain wide open, well I guess you could, just depends on your tolerance of noise . I sold the 4x6 and got the 5 inch excellerator, I like it better, by the way died you get yours ?? The next size up is the 12.5 excellerator, I am hooked on them. I know people here have gotten a few bad ones, I had to send on back, something came loose but regaurdless I still say they are the deepest coils out there, and being a DD coil the separate great for thier size. I hooked my new one up and air tested a nickel, head phones on gain at 4 you can hear the nickel at 10+ inches and it ID's as foil. I think the moisture in the ground also plays a role in the depth of targets that you dig and the ground here is bone dry, even after a rain only the first inch or so is damp. Got into a nest od seed ticks at a school lot the other evening and am still digging and scratching worse than a dog with a bad case o0f fleas. Welp gotta go . HH,let me know what ya think of the 5 inch ex. coil. Ray

Yes I did get the 5". KellyCo worked it out to get me one shipped right away. However, it is still in the box as work and other obligations has not given me any free time in the last couple of days. I did have a hunt planned for tomorrow but had to cancel.

I got the 6x10 DD coil a couple months back, and after a brief learning curve, I prefer it over the stock coil. Because of high minerals in my area, I could never get the gain above 9 or 10 with the stock coil. With the DD, I can regularly get it to +1 or +2 without excessive falsing. This has resulted in hitting deeper targets regularly. I haven't noticed it to be any noisier than the stock coil. The only down side I see is that you have to swing slower than with the stock coil, or you run the risk of missing targets. What's the ground mineralization in your area like? Maybe this has something to do with it. I know that there are certain places in my area where both the stock and the DD coil just go crazy due to particular soil conditions. In those cases, I usually use my Headhunter Wader since completely immune to the problem.
Hope you get the problem worked out.
HH,
Dan

If your DD or stock is going crazy in a particular area, it could be that there is a lot of decomposed iron there. You might want to lock the GB, before you start sweeping in that particular patch.

I see many are trying to run +3 or max gain and if you are than this is why it is so noisy. We can run on a average 9 or 10 and there are a few area where we can run it in the +1 or a +2 and put up with a little noise. Some say lock the tracing which may help too if there is a lot of iron around as stated in the owners manual. I can run in the auto trac most of the time with the 6X10 and get great depth and very little chatter if any, but I run my gain at 9 or 10 and still got a old house key at 11 inches and my wife got a 1840 seated dime at 9 inches.

My gound run right about 50. I've tried running the gain high and low. I seem to get a lot of noise and signals regardless of how I set it.

what disc setting do you use? Do you let the meter tell you whats under the coil or set it at iron and dig all the high readings? I know the MXT will give high readings on alot of stuff that is deep that isnt iron.

Worst gets to worst, I can loan you one to test. But it sounds faulty to me. Probably will need to be sent in for repair/replacement. HH Jim

I always lock the ground at 50 before I start sweeping as that is what my ground runs ...

I have been running the relic mode with the disc at the first preset and going for the high tones as it will let me know which targets to check out and which ones not too, if too many low tones I will push the trigger forwards so I get mostly the high tones. If I am just going to be coin hunting in a pulltab infested park I will go to the second preset. In both cases if it is a shallow signal I will glance at the meter and get a idea and move on if it is someting I dont want. Now if if is a weaker signal I will watch how the meter acts along with the audio and pinpoint and check the signal again in the disc mode to make sure I am going over the target on center.

Turn your gain level down. Higher Gain levels mean potentially Higher NOISE levels which can obliterate your performance.
The + Sensitivity Settings on the MXT should never be used during your primary search as all your doing is AMPLIFYING both Signal AND NOISE.

....you may indeed be right.
I'm not too sure what type of ground that you typically hunt in, but to say that everyone should never use the PLUS settings is not sound advice.
Would you care to rephrase your post on this subject?
In some locales if you do not go into the PLUS zone you cannot achive competitive depth, and you lose excellent audio target response volume.
Ground conditions dictate PLUS or MINUS gain settings, not schematic diagrams, or engineer reports.

I know what he told me months ago-I have found him to be correct--He was one of the MAJOR designers of this detector---Deathwind1

I agree GLC. I use mine below or at the preset at most locations and from time to time I get into the plus. I just went to a location this past weekend where the ground was awesome and I ran it at plus 3. I found some wheats and a merc at some great depths. I agree it is not the norm, but I do get into some spots where plus works well.

I think the "MAJOR DESIGNER" title on this one belongs to Dave Johnson.

I am sure he was all I know Is WHITES said He had a major input on designing--By that I mean what he wanted in the MXT---deathwind1
