The At Pro a new gold prospecting......?

Being a VLF detector probably no better then the Xterra 70 from minelab. Not sure about the features as far as prospecting goes but I really like the AT's underwater feature and its discrimination ability.

Very impressed with its target speed and tones and its audio abilities.

The videos were interesting to watch. I was eyeballing this machine from the sidelines prior to the announcement and I'm seriously considering it as a coin machine. If it is well received upon release, I may consider adding it to my collection. The anti-Garrett brigade are taking a few indeserved potshots at it (as to be expected) but at first glance it looks promising. The 15Khz will go slightly deeper than 18.75khz and will enable coin hunters to work deeper targets. I'm not a big fan of air tests but those videos suggest a very sensitive response at considerable distance from the coil.

The Garrett AT Pro is CLEARLY aimed at knocking Minelab's top X-Terra off the perch. We can see this with the way it introduces "new ground-breaking features" that are still almost identical to the X-Terra 70/705 ... with the obvious exception being that the new Garrett is waterproof to 10ft (providing that the optional waterproof headphones are purchased along with the detector). Other features like the "new (?) 99 notch" target ID (same as the X-Terra) and the "unique ability to spot a coin alongside iron" (same as the X-Terra in All-Metal-Mode) have been on the X-Terra 70/705 for a good number of years now. They've even chosen the same color scheme.

The really BIG question will be Can it handle Australian soils? I don't know. But I understand that Charles Garrett himself was unable to comprehend why his detectors had so many problems here some years ago until he took a closer look. The Garrett detectors now shipped to Australia are said to be altered upon arrival by the distributors to better handle our soil conditions. The price is going to be the winning point for this detector. And will the Australian and US dollar close to parity at the moment, I'll be curious to see how well the price is maintained. Suggested priced here in Australia last week was $999. That's a little unreasonable with the dollar situation at present. At the moment, it's pretty much an X-Terra 705 that can have the control box submerged - with the appropriate headphones of course.

As a prospecting detector, it may be similar to the X-Terra 70/705 although IF it goes deeper, then it will attract all the sales to the detriment of Minelab's machine/s. As a prospecting detector, this is going to be very interesting to observe in operation.

Note that the Australian version will be designated as the "AT Pro International" - which suggests there may be some internal alterations. Lets see what the public thinks after it's been in circulation a short while while. As a fairly devout Minelab user, I do own some Garrett products and I like the way this detector is projected so far. It's one of the top three brands so you know it will probably be a winner.

The AT Pro does not have a true all metal mode, like the Prospecting Mode on the X-Terra 70/705. It does have the less powerful "zero discriminate" mode, like the X-Terra in Coin & Treasure mode with all notches set to accept.

I am going to get an AT Pro myself for sure. But for freshwater detecting, not prospecting. I am sure it can find a gold nugget but in my opinion prospecting is not going to prove to be its strong suite. The Minelab it most resembles actually is the X-Terra 505, which also lacks a true all metal mode.

Yep I was thinking 505 also due to the no all metal. Hope to hear your reports on the AT PRO machine Steve!

Hi Alan,

I'm pretty excited by the unit especially for fresh water detecting. My time is limited and I will finally have a unit that will allow me to really focus on the target range I think will most likely deliver me a gold ring in the lakes around here.

Where it could actually be a decent prospecting unit would be in streams with a mask and snorkel. Even though no all metal at 15 kHz it will be hotter than most underwater units. Only the Tesoro at 12 kHz comes close and they have not made those for over a year now. And since it has interchangeable coils with a small coil it could be a good little creek sniper.

Well I haven't tried the AT, but I personally don't think it will approach the Minelab Excal for water or hunting otherwise....

Hopefully a detector that sells for twice as much has some advantage. But for freshwater I think the AT Pro has promise. And I have used the Excalibur.

Yes the 12 KhZ Tesoro Tiger Shark.

No true All-Metal mode is a downfall, but does the AT Pro have have true Auto-Trac ground balance ??

Thanks Steve, so NO true All-Metal mode and NO true Auto-Trac ground balance on the AT Pro. Then it is NOT a good prospecting detector. I would much rather buy an X-Terra 705, T2--F75 Special Edition, or the new Whites MXT 'Pro' instead then. The ONLY advantage of the AT Pro is it is the only detector with waterproofing and a digital screen, those are not enough selling features for me to have me sold on it.

There is no excuse for that because Garrett does have this technology on their GTI-2500.

Relics Mode or Zero Discriminate Mode or All Metal Search Mode & Non-Motion All-Metal Mode and TRUE Auto-Trac ground balance called FastTrac Ground Balance on the GTI-2500, SO WHY CAN'T THEY PUT THIS TECHNOLOGY ON THE "AT PRO" ?

I think Garrett has failed with providing these features on this new machine and I will not even think of buying one.

Hi David,

I think it is simple - Garrett was not trying to build a prospecting detector. They wanted a good multi-use detector for coins, jewelry, and relics. Prospectors may not flock to it but plenty of other people will. I sure want one for freshwater detecting myself.

Please give reports! I am eager to hear, especially if the same person owns and Excal and an AT Pro.

David...dont knock it till you try it.

Its primarily a Relic machine...anything else is secondary.
