The 6x8 SEF coil is a beast! Love it!

I recently found a 6x8 SEF coil for my ETRAC on eBay since I've read some great reviews by some respected MDers, and since I tend to work in highly trashy areas, I figured why not?

So my first day out I found a bunch of Wheats, and a King George I Farthing (1717-1724) which is my oldest coin to date, and some clad. Not bad, but definitely not enough to consider the coil "better" than the Pro stock. It's just one hunt. Then today I get out for a few hours and decide to work the same area I found the Farthing, and I find 3 Barbers! A really ugly worn 1904 quarter, and two dimes (1916 S, 1908 D). So is this coil better? It's only been two hunts in a spot I pounded many times before, so all I can say is I'm VERY impressed. Lucky? Well I've lived my entire life being lucky, but I suppose this smaller coil is better than the Pro like others have said. :)

Quick impressions on the coil:

1) If you pass over a coin, or good target, it's solid all around on tones and accuracy.

2) I've been running it non-stop in a trashy environment on Manual Sensitivity 26, and although it's nulling out a lot because I have a trashy pattern enabled and discriminating out a lot of junk, it's been finding this stuff in spots I worked with the stock Pro coil which missed them.

3) Weight is similar to me.

4) Only con for me that is, is that if you run the cable up through the shaft, it's tight trying to flatten the coil down and hang it like I do at home on a hook in the basement. I just don't flatten the coil all the way since there's pressure on the cable, and I don't wanna damage it. That's the only thing I don't like. :)

Thanks for the great review and congrats on your finds. I have SunRay X-8 coming with my E-trac this week but I like elliptical coils. I have thought seriously about saving for the 4.5x7 but don't know much about it. I used a 4x6 on my Whites that I use to have and loved it.

Have not used the 6x8, but everyone that uses them seems to love'em. If I was not saving up for the CTX, I would try one myself.

Nice finds, I've heard a lot of good things about that coil.

Nice coins

How did you find depth compared to the stock coil?

the 6" Excelerator rocks HARDER in heavy trash...and hits 9" deep coins.

I've been saying for a couple of years now....I would LOVE to see a 4 x 6 SEF coil...are you listening Detech???:bouncy:

Nice digs Ron:thumbup:...and agreed here. The 6 x 8 SEF coil is a killer coil.

Keep up the nice finds:beers:

I love my 6 x 8 coil! I bought it about six months after I bought my Etrac in early 2009. It works well and depth is close to that of the 11" pro coil

I did have a 6 x 8 coil fail due to what you were mentioning about flattening the coil. It failed right after the end of the warranty (it was failing while under warranty, but I thought it was my ETrac failing). Kellyco was wonderful to work with and helped me out on my replacement.

Congrats on the great finds! How deep were they?

You are trading off depth for separation. Sometimes I wish I had 6 coils at 1 inch increments so I could cover all the possibilities. That is what the DF surf machine does, but only has two effective coil diameters, and it is PI right?

Congrats on the great finds !

I've never used a 6 x 8 coil but it seems like everyone that has one thinks it's a fantastic coil !

I really like my 6" Excellerator coil - great for separation in iron - gets in tight spots - real good depth - pin points like a laser - and something that's real important to me ...
unlike most coils - the 6" Excellerator is not an open spoke type coil ... so no hang ups on brush stubble in mowed and overgrown areas !
