The 505 and I got out today. First timer

It was a beautiful day in Pittsburgh today and it was my first day with my new 505, I needed to see if I made a good choice?.quite simply, I think I had a GREAT DAY. My machine went beyond my expectations and I ended a three hour outing with $1.54. I found 5 quarters, 1 dime, two nickles and 9 pennies (one wheatie). There were a thousand beeps that occurred and since I knew not the chase them all, I would start doing notch discrimination to get better reads. If I kept getting good sound, down on one knee I went. Of the 12 or so deep holes I dug, damn if there wasn't a coin in there most every time. I marveled at each one, even the penny digs. My day at the sled hill could have been better if the find area made better sense to me? Almost every coin was at the very bottom of the hill. Not at the end of the sled run, where I thought they would be?? I can not wait to get to a tot-lot. Can someone also help me with what to clean these quarters with. Two of my find are so dirty that I can't tell if they're silver or clad?

If your quarters are dirty, that is almost a sure sign that they are clad. Some people use a rock tumbler to clean their coins with.

Congrats of the finds:thumbup: sounds like your off to a very good start. Tot-lots may have good bit of trash and good finds. Sure does help you to learn your detector.
Continued HHing,

I clean mine in a rock tumbler. The Harbor Freight rock tumbler is about the best deal out there. You can get a single barrell 3lb tumbler right now for $19.00 as advertised in their flyer. I put in about 100 coins (Never mix pennies with clad tho) and then fill the barrell to 3/4 full with aquarium gravel, then squirt some dawn dish soap and a half a cup of water and let it run for about 5 hours and the clad come out pretty darn good.

Any quarter that is older than 1965 is silver...and penny older than 1984 is copper...dimes and nickels older than 1965 are also silver...(do not quote me on the nickels and dimes)

GGG the only silver nickels were from 1942 to 1945. Some 1982 cents are copper and some are zinc.
