The 5 minute sub-zero hunt.

Metal note, my Lesche will NOT cut through frozen ground, even if I really really try.

Decided to try a spot I was researching, and since I was off I figured I'd just dress warmly, and everything would be fine. I found an old foot-path on an aerial that disappeared in the 1940's. Drove to the location, started to swing, and immediately started hitting deep 7-8" targets that were VERY promising. Bend down, grab my digger, and CLUNK! Solid as a rock. I thought that maybe the top inch or so would only be frozen, but bot was I wrong. Couldn't even dig half an inch. So, that was a quick hunt. At least I saved some targets with the GPS so I'll know where they're at as soon as the ground thaws. Just a little bummed I couldn't dig today. :)

Winter sucks!  I had the same thing happen to me a few times last year and broke a shovel or two in the process. My Predator Tools Raptor was the only thing that wold cut through the frost, and it couldnt even manage if it was more than a few inches.

If you're still looking to hunt try unshaded South facing slopes, woody areas with heavy grass or leaf cover or shallow rivers. Those areas are nomally huntable for a little while longer.

Haha that's exactly where I was hunting. Direct sunlight, etc, but it was in the teens today. It sucks, but it looks like I have to wait till next week when the temps are "suppose" to hit the 50's again.

Same here in Idaho. Friggin cold.

Yeah, I know. I got my CTX last week, Sub Freezing Temps, Now Today, a butt load of snow!!!, Come om Spring!!! HH...Jesse.

Sorry about the weather folks, but this morning I was in a short sleeved shirt and still got warm.. 73 here right now... Come on down to Galveston and hunt!

You keep throwing out those invites, you're going to get some folks on your doorstep with a pile o' CTX's neslot! I took my new CTX out today in 3 inches of new snow to a pounded park. My plan was to try and use the GPS feature to mark some finds and then go back on Tuesday when it's in the 50's and try to find the targets. Key lesson; bring your manual with you so you know how to turn the fracking GPS on! They really buried that in the controls.

51 in Seattle today! :poke:

Seems like everyone has a new CTX3030 (me to), :clapping: but half of us can`t use them because we have frozen ground. :rage: We have two days of (40-50 degrees) thaw forecast for next week, but I know that will not be enough to thaw out more than a 1/2 inch of frost. Maybe by March we will get to do some digging. :detecting: The waiting will be hard.
