I am slowly working my way across a Civil War skirmish site. The site is now a mix of pasture and cropland, and encompasses several acres. Based on my research, I have begun at a spot behind the Union lines where the reserve regiments would have been deployed, and possibly near the atrillery. I am using the 13"x17" coil due to little EMI and light trash. I am running an open screen except for the 35-45 to 35-50 range (trusty rusties). I am also heavily relying upon the GPS and Mapping abilities of the CTX to record where I have passed before and record where my finds were located. Though the land has been tilled before, lead will not wander too far from its drop spot. I hope to put together a piece of the battlefield and show where certain groups of soldiers were. To my knowledge, this site has been surface hunted before, but never with a metal detector.
In this hunt, I managed to find some dropped .58 round balls, a few pistol balls, a .69 round ball with three indentions from buckshot (buck-and-ball), artillery frags, and a shoe tap. The trash I am contending with is light, and is mostly agricultural iron and shotgun shells. This site will hopefully keep me busy through the spring as I sweep from the Union rear lines to the Confederate battle line.
The large coil handled exceptionally well. On some occasions, I dug offcenter from the target, but in reflecting on the video, it was due to my failure to properly mark the middle of the coil before digging. Several of the targets were deep -- 11+ inches. Please enjoy the video and photo.
