Thought I would share this story with anyone looking for a deep single tone detector and can find one of the older model 1266's One of my first detectors was a white coil/stem fisher 1266 bought back in the early 90's and it was depth monster.....sold it big mistake.. anyway the other day I found out a gentleman that lived close by had a 66 for sale it was a early 188xx series with the white coil/rod in very nice condition bought it and took it to my test garden thats 10 plus years old.. with the 8 inch coil, the disc at 5, sensitivity.pushed in and turned to 1:00 oclock I checked it out on a 10 inch deep 3 ringer minnie ball it hit solid so I began to raise the coil and at 4 to 5 inches above the ground I was still getting a smooth signal.thats 14 to 15 inches on a minnie ball with lots of sensitivity to spare which is amazing for a detector this old..I will be keeping this one.. I still consider the 1266 one of the best detectors ever made thanks HH joe
Your right they are deep seekers especially the older ones, I have had the white coil one and the black coiled one the white coil one seemed to go deeper, but I now have the 1270 and I believe it goes just as deep and also has the silencer mode manual gb and iron disc. Now don't get me wrong I would still jump on a nice white coiled 1266x cause they are great machines!! But man it's nice not to have all that snap crackle pop of the 1266x with the 1270 in silence mode!
I've owned a 1266x for many years. It's mainly used for CW relics. I don't go detecting w/o it. When you speak of "snap crackle pop" I guess you referring about when rejecting ferrous items. Mine is so quite, I have to press the battery check button, time to time, to make sure my auvio Headphones are still working
Joseph get you a 10-1/2" coil and put on there they get 2 or more inches deeper!! Good luck with your new detector and keep us informed on the many finds ahead of you. Also I use a hothead 12" coil they work great and go deep and cover more ground.
I have spent countless hours with the Fisher 1220, 1260, 1265, and 1266x detectors and can say they were all very deep detectors even if they were on the noisy side in the trash. Deep silver coins have an unmistakeable sound on these detectors......sweet and mellow.
I can remember buying a new 1260x with 11", 8" and a 3 3/4" coils in a kit form from the distributor in Florida..... all for less than 400.00 if memory serves me correct. One of my favorite accessories for these detectors was the Depth Master signal amps. This device worked
great on these detectors and I dug some coins at depths I couldn't believe. I have never had a detector that felt as good to swing as the 1266x does....it just feels like an extension of your arm. Certainly brings back some great memories of using some of the best detectors
Fisher ever built. HH......
i have a mint 1266x and a mint 1265x both are neck and neck in depth but the stock 8" concentric coil on the 1265x is a bit better than the spider coil on the 1266x.
I have and still use my 1266-X, I think I got mine in 1984. Also have the 12" HotHead coil for it. Like said above, it IS an extention of your arm. I dug a 1923 peace dollar at 14" with it. And a 18kt. man's diamond ring at 13" that has 6- 11 point white diamonds in it.......nge
Hi folks,
I'm looking for a very sensitive detector for gold. I'll be looking in a remote area where there won't be any trash. (Central American jungle) This 1200 series sounds pretty good. However, the popular sentiment seems to say the Minelab GPX 5000 is the ultimate detector for this sort of thing. (Yeah, and it's $5000!) Does anyone have any experience in a comparison of these two? Or, what other detectors might someone suggest for this situation. If I'm going to all this effort, I don't want to be walking past any nuggets.
Thanks,
Dan
