The 11th hour.

Went to a ball park thats just a few minutes from my house to do some detecting, even though this park gets hammered weekly I hadn't been in a while and just wanted to give it a try.
The park isn't old at all (late 1960s),but an old timer told me that a kind of Farmers market use to be set up on the park site during summer months in the 30s and 40s.
I got there just about dark and after a couple of hours of digging nothing but clad about 90 cents worth and most of it was less than 3 inchs deep I got frustrated and started for the truck.

Not more than 100 feet from the parking lot I got a good signal at 8-10 inchs that bounced between iron and 50 cents .being so deep I decided to dig this one last hole since it was 11:15 pm and I was tired. At the bottom of the plug about 5 inchs I found a frameing nail. Checked the hole again and got a 50 cent to dollar signal.
Thinking this was probably a beer can top (thats what it usually is on 50- 100 signal) I just hastily jabbed my shovel in the hole deep to get it.
To my surprise a 1943 50 cent walking liberty poped out of the 8 inch hole,I was elated since this was mt first half silver.
But after I got it home and cleaned it I had mangled and scratched it bad with the shovel.

From now on I will treat every good signal with care and dig it like its a buried egg.
Another lesson learned was the Etracs don't get everyhing. Dano505.

Do you think it was masked, or do you think it was in a spot that has just been over looked? Looks pretty nice to me!!

Dave,I do think it was masked, because the nail was slightly to one side of the plug, the side where most people come into the ball field and start their detecting.Since I was coming the other way I got the 50 cent signal also. One thing I have noticed about my 505 is that it is very good at separation if you go slow enough.
This park especially in the winter is hammered hard by other detectors, two guys with Minelabs one of them is an Etrac are there constantly,so I am very proud to have found it.

Like the terminator said, "I'll Be Back":twodetecting:

What?... No photo of the nail?

Congrats. That is too cool. I have NEVER found any silver coins or even a wheaty, and I have found over 500 coins.
