The 10x12 SEF coil how good is the performance on the Sovereign???

There are probably a lot of Sovereign user"s who are curious about this coil.Any information about this coil from actual user's would be appreciated. Thanks Ron

I bought one. Had it for about 2 weeks. Hated it! Sold it (Included my disappointing review to buyer) and I noticed that the buyer sold it shortly afterward.

Depending on the soil I was used to getting Wheats down to around 8-9 inches with my stock 10" Tornado, but with the 10X12" SEF I was lucky to get them at 5". It did seem to handle trashy areas better, but I'm not sure if that was an actual benefit or just a side effect of it's poor depth . I noticed the Etrac and Explorer users seem to love the coil, but based on my limited time with one I would not recommenced it for the Sovereign.

ZOFCHAK, I have noticed they don't usually carry them in stock. The one I used on my Explorer had good depth I didn't like the way it pinpointed but most of all the extra weight was too much for this unit.I entertained the thought of picking a 10x12 for the Sovereign, but have not heard anyone who said they liked the coil for the Sovereign. My guess was it was a poor performer when changed to a BBS coil. Thanks Ron

I can't offer any info with much expertise to go with it.But I put my 12x10 on the other day for the first time and I got my first two Barber's with my GT. Neither were too deep and the signal's weren't to big. I've hunted this area before many times and never found these Barber's. I have gotten Merc's and other stuff from here including a nice silver ring. So, was this just coincidence or was it the coil and the fact that I am learning the machine better. I don't know, but I got old silver with the SEF and that's a fact. I haven't used the stock 10" Tornado coil yet. Now you guy's got me wondering. I think I will put the Tornado on this weekend for a go before the snow flies. I would like to hear more on this subject also, both the 10" Tornado and the SEF.
Good hunting Gary

my buddy is hard wiring one to his excal. as i type this message..............his 2nd.............he loves it - 10x12

i have a 12 x 15 inbound as i type, should arrive today or tomorrow, weather permitting i will let u know how it does on the beach and dirt.

this guy made a beliver out of me a few weeks ago................o m g what he has found

says it really goes deep and is HARD to pin point, i will let u know on that also.

he loves his

Gravedigger, let me know how everything works out with the coil.I'm not sure about the SEF yet for the Sovereign. The 12X15 has users who like this coil if its like the SEF on the Explorer its pinpoint spot is back of the mounting ears.I may have to try one of these for myself. Thanks for the information.HH Ron

Max,

I have the 15x12 on the Sovereign.

Make sure that the cable gland nut (where the cable goes into the coil) is done up nice and finger tight. Mine was quite loose when I got it.

If using in the water and the nut is loose then water could get into the coil....goodbye coil.

It is a deep coil...probably an inch to two inches deeper than the stock.

Tony.

Does anyone know if this is true? Its a poured epoxy coil, didnt think that could happen.

G'day Neil,

I initially read about this sort of problem some years ago when some "waterproof" coils were found to be leaking because of insufficiently tightened cable gland nuts.
Now I don't remember if these were solid epoxy coils or the lighter, hollow style (which are not normally regarded as waterproof).

When I got my SEF coil, I was able to rotate the nylon nut a full 360

I have had/have 3 new SEF's (12x15 for Sov, 12x15 and 10x12 for etrac)and all have needed tightening of the nut before use, they seemed only finger tight, no probles with water ingress to date(and they get real wet)

it may help if you slacken the nut and apply some clear silicon sealent to the nut then tighten before it cures,,,makes a good watertight seal,,,p.s,,. my friend had a s.e.f. for his sov, gt and said he couldnt put machine in manual as it was very unstable on the beach,,,had to use it in auto for best results,,,,he also sold his after a coupla weeks,,,said it was crap,,,comcat:ukflag:

Hey all!

That's all great news on the "nuts",:super: but I would still like to know if it is worth buying a 10 X 12 or 15 X 12 SEF for the GT? Will the SEF work better than the 10" "stock" coil? How would a SEF compare to a WOT on the GT? Which is better for wet & dry beach hunting?? (WOT or SEF?)

I like the WOT over the SEF (I've used both) on my GT and the WOT for the Excal on dry and wet sand, on my second Excal I use the BBS 10" for surf work as it seems to hold it course much better in the surge than the 15" WOT, In fact I sold the SEF, but will never sell the WOT or 10" stock coil. I did add a 6" for trashy areas when using the GT.

I think the standard 10" Tornado coil is one of the best.

I recently purchased the 15" x 12" SEF coil but sold it as it wasn't compatible with my amplifier.

Running the SEF coil with stock GT was fine but it wouldn't work with even the amplifier at minimum power.

I am back to the 10" Tornado which runs perfectly even with the amplifier at maximum.

I plan to borrow a WOT to see if it will be okay with the amplifier (which is an essential part of my Sov GT now).

I don't believe there will be a huge depth increase with the WOT as it's main design is for beach coverage.

For coin/ring sized targets and this applies to most detectors, a 10" or 11" is optimised for these sized targets.

"biglry's" post above is something I agree with entirely. If I could only have one coil then it would be the 10" stock......it is the chosen stock coil for a very good reason.
