thd pinpointer

won on e-bay brand new....almost looks just like there other pinpointer...has a light in the end?

There's a Chinese knock off floating around that looks like it but doesn't have the name GARRETT on it in big letters. The light on the Garrett model is up high on the body. Here's a pic of the Garrett.

That;s a great price for that THD. It should work as a pinpointer. But it's built for security purposes.

Think I saw this one on garrett website?..almost sure...they are selling some for like 150.00 and up!.........thd...with a light on the end...almost sounds like it will do the same thing as the other one?.....I guess when I get I will let everyone know....THANKS!

Yeah that's their security scanner. The PP is a highly revised version of that. When they sent me the prototype to test it was basically what you have pictured - tweaked here and there.

Would the fact that this THD operates on a frequency of 95 kHz as opposed to the Propointer's 12 kHz cause problems?

I'm admittedly technically ignorant on this, but the big difference in frequency seems like it might make this unit not work very well as a pinpointer.

I took John Edmonton's advice and called Melinda at Garrett. I was hoping the THD would be similar to the Propointer in specs and provide me with a high performance pinpointer when I don't want audio.

She didn't know some of the answers to my questions about the THD, but she was extremely helpful and found out for me.

While I waited on the phone, she actually tested out the THD for me.

The bad news is only 1/2 inch on a penny and only one strength of vibration - in other words the vibration does not get stronger as it gets closer to the target.

This unit was made for law enforcement and I'm sure it's a sturdy and well built product, but as far as metal detecting performance goes it doesn't sound any better than a Harbor Freight cheapie.

Hundred times better than a harbor freight!.......That ok I have a pistol probe that out does them all....Just have to be carefull where you use it?
I couldn't help but get it for 37.00 shipped!....more toys!..guess I will take it apart and see what makes it tick.

Mascard - I'm curious to hear what you think about the THD.

I had said in my earlier post that Melinda at Garrett had tested the unit for me and it got 1/2 inch on a penny and no variation in the vibration as the unit gets closer to the target.

I also said that would be no better performance than a Cen-Tech from Harbor Freight.

You responded that it was a hundred times better than a Harbor Freight so I'm guessing you're getting better depth than Melinda reported.

Let us know what you think.

Thanks!
