I sent a letter to Ft Jackson (after they told me I couldn't detect on the beach) explaining that I look for coins.

Hello Mr. Carey,
Unfortunately, metal detectors are forbidden on Fort Jackson. As are any activities of discovery other than state projects for anthropological research. This is primarily due to the fact that much of the installation has been used for training at one time or another and the concern is over UXO, unexploded ordnance as well as historical artifacts, which the government would prefer be in a museum rather than private hands.
Sorry we couldn't meet your recreation needs.

I Love the UXO explanation, this includes the beach where many people swim and they use a bulldozer... It is different everywhere you go, I had no problems at other Forts.

Although I have searched outside of the Ft Jackson Area, which use to be part of Ft Jackson and now public property.

hi, magicman. yeah, that does suck. i thought anthropology was the study of man. i think they meant to say archaeology. the uxo is apparently not that big of a concern if people are regularly swimming and hanging out on the beach while dozers turn the sand. it sounds like one of the big boys there like to detect the beach. things have been known to happen like that. i have to stop now before i get started on uncle sam's position on recreational metal detecting, and the outright dumbness and wastefulness of it. our taxes at work. anthropology, my butt. hh,

tabdog!..you talk funny!

Well I was back at the Fort and today I saw them digging everywhere with trench diggers. I'm sure they looked for bombs before they starting digging.

I was talking to someone about my metal detecting stories and she said I should look around, I told her that it is forbidden at the fort because artifacts belong in the musem and she said to me "how is it going to get there if they don't let you look?" I think she is a pretty smart girl. More importantly she knows folks and she said I don't think so&so is like that and I will ask.

SO, maybe I will get green light, maybe not.

Magicman bit your tongue you only have a short time to go. Don't make waves. Gray Ghost and I have the same opinion of the government.
TD that must be the Arkie accent you are talking because here in WI we don't call dung that. Jer
