That post I made about the AT PRO ( several pages back now ) has had over 2700 hits. Think it'll hit 3000? Garrett is tickled pink over it.

It's got a long way to go if it wants to beat your Pro Pointer thread from a while back. But I bet it'll top 4,000!

I think you should sticky it so it stays at the top of the list,,that we don't loose it

Over the years with many new units coming out have read it all, but in this instance I really believe Garrett has developed a winner at half the price of some of the big boys and indeed will be a welcome to many Detectorists arsenals....

Did you mean 'tickled GREEN'???? LOL!

IS IT NOVEMBER YET?

I agree. Most people that want one doesn't have to sell a car to get one. This thing has features that most $1200 machines don't. Were you aware that it's waterproof?

I must of missed something - besides being waterproof, what features does it have that $1200 machines don't have?

It's got the all-hype mode. It works without even touching the detector!!.

Seriously, I think making it waterproof was the biggest news story here. What I was disappointed to see in the videos was the flimsy plastic over the display. Did you notice how easily it moved when he was pointing at it? I wonder if it will scratch easily too?

Other than a designated underwater machine what general purpose machine is waterproof? What general purpose machine that is waterproof has target ID in addition to tone ID? How many $1200 underwater general purpose TID machines do you know that weigh 3.03 lbs or less? What $1200 general purpose underwater machines has all the machines adjustments on the front panel without scrolling through menus and sub menus? How many $1200 underwater TID machines come standard with a newly designed DD coil? How many $1200 relic machines are there that when it's raining will keep you from wrapping your machine in sandwich wrap? What $1200 TID prospecting machine has protection that when you drop it in a creek renders it useless? What $1200 machines can switch from a beginner machine to a pro machine with one push of a button. Sure some $1200 machines can be set up to replicate most of the features on the AT Pro. But you have to scroll through menus, download programs to it, notch out targets with block edit so on and so on. But are they waterproof? Are all the adjustments out where you can see them? Don't you think that if a manufacturer is getting $1200 plus for a machine that it should be waterproof anyway? I do. Now how many machines out there have all the features of the ATPro for $597.00? It is true that without having used one I'm not absolutely sure of it's performance. I don't think it's hype when Garrett produces videos and shows us what the machine is capable of. I do not believe that the Garrett family would make any claims if it wasn't true. Before Charles Garrett would let his Son and lead engineer go on video for all to see - he would make sure all claims are true. I sure would if my family name was on a machine.

It looks like his finger is making a shadow to me? Not sure. But all manufacturers have some kind of plastic cover over the actual LCD screen that is flexible. No different than the screen on a $1500 Whites V3i or $800 MXT etc. I don't think it's an issue. You are right about the waterproof being big news. This alone sells me. Heck all I ever wanted was an Ace 250 with manual ground balance. Here I get that and tons more!

So to sum up the "features this has that $1200 machines don't have" are that: it is waterproof, it has a beginner mode, and that it costs $600 with the waterproof thing the most important feature for you.

So I guess I didn't miss anything after all. It doesn't have any important features that $1200 machines don't have (at least to me since I don't hunt in water and the environmental covers available for the $1200 machine render them rain proof, as most of us who buy $1200 can afford to buy a $20 environmental cover and do not use "sandwich wrap" to protect our machines.

BTW a number of $600 machines with similar feature sets do come to mind, Minelab's Xterra 705, Teknetics Omega, Fisher F5, Whites M6, Tesoro Cortes are all machines with similar feature sets (minus the waterproof thing of course) that retail new for around $600.

To me the most important thing about the AT Pro isn't the feature set it has, which is a bit Spartan by high end relic machine standards but rather how it does at finding relics. The things I really want to find out about it are: is it more sensitive or at least as sensitive as a T2 for instance, is the recovery speed faster than other relic machines, is its iron see thru ability as good as it demonstrates in air tests. I've been waiting 20 years more or less for Garrett to come out a new technology machine geared towards relic hunting and they finally have done so. I can't wait for my pre-ordered AT Pro to show up so I can separate the real performance characteristics from the extravgant claims made on this forum such as it will make all other detectors obsolete and that it is the best metal detector ever built. These claims may or may not be true but the air test videos don't prove anything about how its performance will be in real life as we hunt in dirt not air, so making wild claims like that can't be justified. I have a lot of respect for Garrett's engineering team - they have a great recent track record and I expect that they have done a great job with AT Pro. I am sure the machine can stand on its own with any need for wild unsubstantiated claims to inflate its abilities.

Well you make some good points. Yes the waterproof thing is the best thing I like. I had a Xterra 30,50 and 70. All good machines except both my 30 and 50 were turning off by themselves. The 70 as well as the 705 if waterproof would make them a lot better. I have swung a M6 for years having owned two of them. In my opinion the M6 is Whites sleeper machine. But it's heavy and lacks notch discrimination. (which I personally like). Plus of course it's not waterproof. When I started swinging the Ace 250 I was impressed with all the features for such a low price. I loved the notch disc and lightweight feel. Now the At pro is coming out with even more features plus it's waterproof. I don't think anything is being hyped as we see a lot of the features being shown by the lead Garrett engineer. I don't see us making any claims other than what has been shown on video. It's been too long since a US company has taken any leaps of engineering. Most machines that are new are the same machine with an added feature like tone ID and a backlite. This ATPro seems to be a different animal. I look forward to giving it a whirl.
