That nickle range

Active member
Alright all you fellow MXT and M6 users. . I just dug up a dozen orange nickles. All of them read on the meter @ 18-20. Dead on. I have never found a gold ring at this range and yet I was taught that most gold rings are at the nickle range. Has anyone ever dug up a gold ring that was at the nickle 18-20 range? I mean have you ever saw the reading right there at 18-20 and were absolutely certain it was a nickle and it turned out to be a gold ring to your surprise?
Just curious.

Coincidence but I dug up a small 18kt gold womens wedding band today it was about 20 I remember because I typically see pull tabs just over 20 and it was lower. Like I said this was a small band less than half the size/weight of a mens bands I have found.

A gold ring can have a VDI number up to where the silver rings up also. YES, it would be a big thick gold ring, but it's true. Now a small gold child's ring that I have found rang up at 6. I have a thumb ring that rings up right as a nickle. My other rings that I wear are in the mid 30's. Depends on the thickness, content of the gold, size, etc. Not all "nickel" targets are gold rings. And not all "gold" rings are nickel targets! There's many many gold rings out there in the land of OZ. HH....Nancy

I have found gold jewelry above and below so certainly it can be 18 or 20. Just depends on size and karat. A thin chain can read as foil. When you hear nickle range remember, detectors without VDI numbers will have a broader range for nickles on there ID. What may be 14-26 on the MXT will show as possible nickle on units without numbers, hence the thought that gold rings show up as a nickle. When the MXT shows 22,24 etc, I know it's not a nickle, on the Classic ID I won't know unless I dig it.

My MXT seems to like to peg nickles in the 16-20 range. Usually it's a pretty sure bet if the number is just below 20 that I'm going to find a nickle there. Interesting how orange they turn when they've been in the ground for some time.

Hey Dang....ALL the gold rings I've found have been 18-20. About two months ago I found two rings right together....never do that again. Then on March 1st, I was hunting the parking field at the Greenwood, SC fair grounds and found a major like new gold nugget ring (that fits perfectly). I know gold rings can fall in other ranges but so far, 18 - 20 is where I've had the luck. Good luck with the ring hunting.

I have a M6 and most all gold wedding bands come in at 20, smaller engagement type rings almost always come in at a solid 12, I have found a few smaller children's rings that were at 10. I also dug a mans 10k class ring that came in at 65 and a woman's at 37. HH
