Put a garden out this year, first time in several years. We have 8 mater plants including 4 heirlooms, 3 rows of okra, 6 rows of corn, 4 cucumber plants, onions and taters. I've never grown potatoes before so this should be interesting!!

I was hoping to eat the corn but the way gas prices are getting I may have to convert it to fuel!! We put put out 6 rows, staggering two rows every two weeks with the last two rows planted today. So far it seems to be doing good.

A question for you seasoned gardeners out there!! I think the corn and the okra needs to be thinned out some, does anyone know how far apart the plants should be from each other? I have the corn planted 3 inches apart and the okra about the same.

Brian is miserable. He can't move without pain and is going nuts being confined to the recliner all day. He's bored with TV and video games and has read all his new books we got him. He needed to get out of the house for awhile so Carol and I loaded him in the van and went for a drive and to grab some fast food and ate in the van. He was glad for the change of scenery but the pain of lifting him to his wheelchair and then in and out of the car was just too much for him. It looks like he'll have to stay in bed or the recliner for a few more days and I know this will drive him crazy. I know that in a few more days he'll be feeling much better but until then it's just plain miserable for him.

I hope all of you have had a great weekend!!

3" sounds very close for corn, don't know about okra? Must be a southern veggie!

Thank you, Doug, for the nice pics of your garden! Looks like it is growing very well, but......I must tell you that 3 inches is tooooo close for corn stalks! We would plant them 3 seeds to a hill or spot and separate them about a foot or more between, the best I can remember! There is info in the Farmer's Almanac and I think you could probably get info off the Internet by typing in vegetable gardens and how to plant and grow them! I hope your corn does good, because I never really got a lot of ears off mine! There needs to be a large corn field so it pollinates good, otherwise the ears are fewer and not so large! Sweet corn is very good when picked fresh off the stalk! Good Luck farmer Doug!

God Bless!

I'll fire up the laptop tomorrow and show him your post and the pic of Jakkie, he loves animals. Thank you!!

Thanks Betty! I thought 3 inches sounded too close together. I'll do a search and see what I can find out.

I guess it is a southern veggie cause I never heard of it either until we moved down here. It sure is good coated in cornmeal and fried.

Doug, Okra is very good sliced and dipped in cornmeal and fried.....Mom used to grow it and fry it, as we had a garden every year! It is slimy though and to cook it in stews, soups or other ways I don't care too much for it! I think the Southerners use it in lots of ways....like making Gumbo and etc.!

God Bless!
