Just a little history about this site. It is about 4 miles outside of Gettysburg at a little place called Seven Stars. The site is behind a row of modern houses and was originally found about five years ago by a friend of mine. He hunted it for about three months before sharing the spot with me ( which is fine, I probably would have done the same). He hunts until the pickings get scarce then moves on, that's when I move in. After asking my buddy if he minded if I kept hunting the spot he said no, go ahead. I contacted the owner myself and asked if it would be OK and he said sure. The first couple times produced a couple of Eagle "I" buttons, a confederate Block I without a back and a SC coat button. My buddy had found seven SC buttons so we figured it to be a SC camp site.
The following season produced a couple of Gardener's and Enfield bullets and Enfield musket parts. Went back last season and the owner informed me that he was not letting anyone else hunt the spot because he had to run four other people off that did not have permission and it kind of got him upset.
I focused my attention on the property next to this site and again was able to secure permission from the owner. Did find much at all last season but a handful of Gardner's and Enfield bullets, not one button. The owner decided to disc the field this year to turn the soil because it has not been turned for about seven years.
Bingo! after he ran the disc and then raked it out the stuff just floated to the surface. The NC buckle though was still about 15" I Had a very weak signal and thought at first it was just junk and then I thought "the deeper the object the older it is" well, what the heck, I dug down about 10" and the hole started to fill with water but the signal now read "high brass" on my trusty old Whites 5900. After about another three minutes of digging, and you know the rest of the story.
I will post pictures of the site later this week so you can see that this was just a little out of the way spot yet was part of one the most costly battles of the Civil War.Fifteen years of detecting and this by far is my greatest find...
