Thanks to all and an apology

I want to thank all of you who have answered me concerning my hunt in the pre-civil war field with my "V'. I also wanted to apologize if I posted it in the wrong place as the moderator moved it to another Metal Detecting forum. I was not trying to knock Tesoro as I love my machine, but just wanted it to do better in that area then my buddy did (maybe I have a competitive streak!). The coil I used was a 10x12 Butterfly EXcelerator Search Coil. I assume this is considered a double D coil but am not sure. From what some of you have told me, I would do better in this iron-filled area using my standard 9x8 stock coil. I assume this is considered a concentric coil. I plan to go back and try that as soon as I can. Again thanks. Went out yesterday to show a friend who never was MDing before how I hunt on a rec. field, and we found 46 cents and a 1942 MERC dime in 30 minutes. She might be hooked!

Andy thats a nice find that merc its been years since i found one , I have yet to try out the 9x8 in some spots I can say this i have both a 5.75 concentric and a 5.75 DD and the DD is noticeably deeper in my ground and you may have that nasty red dirt in NC you may want to try the smaller DD it will get as good or better depth than the 9x8 in that situation, may you find a 5$ gold coin from the charlston mint Gunnar

Best thing to remember is that each detector has their weakness and strengths, And every dog has his day, sometimes that means being the one that was lucky enough to get your coil over a target. It sounds like to me, you are doing just fine. There are days I go out and dig nothing but foil and pull tabs. But thats ok with me, this is my dirt fishing and I don't have to catch anything to have fun.

Andy:

Mr. Bill (Administrator) has asked that all comparison posts be in the Metal Detecting Forum........ Before that was allowed last year " All comparison posts were frowned on" ..
Now we get to compare using that forum only....

Yes , it does get a bit confusing before I noticed the difference I thought I was reading with my bifocals sideways . Two parishioners in the same church with very similar names .Can I get an amen ?

Amen

Sorry Homebre. Andy ............. Sorry hombre . Anyway We all now know where comparison posts go.... :bouncy:

Better get my readers checked .................................AMEN !!

I read some of your other post. I use a Tesoro Eldorado "UMax". I have been hunting a square nail laden site and was having the same frustrations. I am using a 9x8 coil but am getting a smaller coil as well. Last hunt I played around and ran the ground balance a bit positive and the sensitivity really low, around a 2-4. I then slowed WAY down in the nails, just crawling through them. I found the hunt much better pulling several buckles and leather rivets from the iron. I actually dig a lot of the iron as some of it is my best finds! I was just getting tired of the nails. So play with your settings a bit you may be surprised. Don't worry about loosing too much depth with the lower sensitivity. Even down to 2, I was digging 5-6 inch deep targets (about the max dirt depth for my sites due to the lava flows) but the machine was much more stable and the audio much more descriptive. Good luck!

That may be a good way to hunt around all those rusty can dumps that I find.
