First off, I found your estimate that VDI is less than 50% accurate very interesting. That is a real eye-opener to me, and it makes me wonder what I've been missing. I experimented with sweep speed on some weak targets, and noticed the VDI changes along with the speed.
I started out cold when I got my MXT, and the only experts I have to rely on are right here on this forum, along with a few other sites. Your report has given me insight on how to learn the language my detector speaks. My next few outings are going to be for working on them, and not so much about how many coins I can dig.
Do you think The MXT is a good choice for a first detector, as far as concentrating on learning the audio report of different targets? I have read you use several, and was curious as to what situations you would choose one over the other.
You had an interesting thread going on about jewelry hunting in Prospecting mode. What is the advantage in doing that? I've never tested VDI numbers on small jewelry, but I've dug alot of targets indicating +5 to +10, and get mostly shards of cans. Of course, my hunting is done in parks and schoolyards.
As always, a great thank you to all who take the time to go out of your way and post here. Those of us in the slow lane appreciate it immensely!!

<STRONG>"First off, I found your estimate that VDI is less than 50% accurate very interesting. That is a real eye-opener to me, and it makes me wonder what I've been missing."</STRONG>... We should ALL wonder what we might be missing.
<STRONG>"I experimented with sweep speed on some weak targets, and noticed the VDI changes along with the speed."</STRONG>... The MXT has a very quik response and that includes the visual info, but it is all a matter of the info of any given sweep, and is not an accummulated report from multiple sweeps. Crossing the target with the coil 'centered' is important, and certainly sweep <EM>speed</EM> is going to play a factor. The MXT is a very sensititive detector.

These forums scan be great examples of "people helping people," but we should always be learning as much as we can about our detectors. I know I am always trying to.
<STRONG>"Do you think The MXT is a good choice for a first detector, as far as concentrating on learning the audio report of different targets?"</STRONG>... Yes, I think the MXT can be an excellent 'first detector' for many people. However, it can also be a poor choice for some but that is all dependant upon an individual's patience and tolerance levels, their learning abilities, and we have to throw in the amount of time they are going to devote to using and learning their detector.
I think the MXT can be a very good choice for someone who is serious about learning as much as possible, and who has the patience and will master it. They can do so knowing that they have a high-end, professional-level detector in their hands and shouldn't feel like they have to "move up" so to speak.
<STRONG>"I have read you use several, and was curious as to what situations you would choose one over the other."</STRONG>... Note, also, that I feel it is important to have some coil options, too, so that you can tailor the detector AND COIL to various tasks at hand.
Yes, I can give you a brief explanation why I have what I have, and choose to use what I use. The MXT is a very good multi-purpose detector and, for some, can be the do-all single detector they own. I like the MXT mainly because it has knobbed control nd can provide a tool when I venture into gold nugget country. Also, if I have a definite need to cover a wide-open area I opt for it with the 14" EXcelerator coil. Using the 5" EXcelerator coil which I usualy have mounted to it, it is ready for trashy sites where I might want to use the benefits of the small Double-D coil in conjunction with the very good Target ID infotmation.
I have my XLT, also, which is my 'go-to' detector for nighthunting due to the backlight. The XLT is my 'cruising unit' due to the faster-sweep deign which lets me work a large area at a little faster sweep. An XL Pro can fill this need as well and do it as well or better (depth) than the XLT, but they are close performers and right now, it is the XLT in my arsenal for 'cruising' duties.
There are other times I like to use the XLT due to the excellent Tone ID ... but that is a feature I use with caution and do not rely too heavily on except in certian applications for shallower targets. Frequently I hunt with my XLT with Tone ID turned 'Off.' The other reason I enjoy my XLT is very simple. It is just a 'fun' detector to use sometimes!
Most of the time, however, I prefer to work ghost towns, renovation sites, old homesteads, mining & railroad & lumber camps, etc., where I often encounter a lot of nail-type iron trash. The sites are often brushy, too, and a slow sweep detectior is at its best. My preference is a Classic IDX Pro or Classic III SL. I use the 950 coil on these models when beach hunting or working more open areas, but prefer either the 6

Hi Monte,
I too sent you a thank you message, along with an offer to help you (if you need it) with formatting and cleanup. Anything to help you finish that book of yours so I can buy one. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

Didn't know you were working on one!
I want one too! As well as the Beep-Dig! t-shirt we discussed........... <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> (a year or more ago)
Thanks for the ATC write-up as well. I always appreciate your comments wherever I find them on the forums.
BTW, I think you have the copywrite on Beep-Dig! <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin">
Please advise regarding the book. Thanks!
