Wanted to start out by thanking those who posted tips and tricks on the XTerra so I was ready to use it once I got it, seems like a great machine and in the new open areas where I want to cherry pick and or scout out the ease of use and light balanced swing is just the ticket to get back into shape.
My one question to users is, mine seems to like the medium pieces of iron well rusted in the ground, most seem to be a short chirp that sounds good until you swing in tight then it shows as iron but the small hand made square nails seem to want to show as good targets, (as with all hot running machines)any tips or tricks to ID them rather than digging them up or is it similar to the explorer in that sometimes you just have to dig the target to make sure? My areas are loaded with many small squares and or bent nails and they have always been a pain because 98 out of 100 are them but then 2 times out of 100 it will be a good target that give the same signal.
Thanks
Garry

Hello Garry,

I spend most of my time wading with the HF elliptical coil and don't have many problems ID'ing nails. Now there may be two factors involved in this, one the ground/sand I hunt in, and two the coil I am using.

I have two suggestions that may be of help:

1. Disc Pattern 1 rejects all the negative numbers & 48, so if you are hunting in Disc Pattern 1 switch momentarily to All Metal and see if the target is wrapping from a negative number up around to +48, it is a sure sign of iron.

2. Dig one of the more typical nails, switch to Prospecting mode and check the nail on the ground to see where setting the Iron Mask will reject it. If you encounter a possible nail, engage prospecting mode and see how it reacts to the IM setting. Many people use the Prospecting mode to pinpoint, so doing this can be a simple two step operation during the normal course of business.

To summarize point #2, hunt in Disc mode as normal, switch to Prospecting mode to pinpoint, if target reacts as iron, move on.

That is perfect Thanks Bill, I don't mind the learning curve but a tip like this is why we are here, can't wait to try it tonight in my nail bed old farm :)
