I have just received an 1800's map of one of the counties in my state and have been trying to figure out how to tie in this map with a new county map and find everything with my GPS. Have been sitting here for over an hour reading all the postings from everyone and now I think I can find everything I need to find the old houses and schools on the old map. Just wanted to thank you for taking time to help us GPS 101 dummies. If I have any problems you will hear from me. For right now everything is clear as mud but clearing up fast.

Using OziExplorer and a GPS unit is probably about the best way to use older maps to help you find place of interest. To calibrate the maps use some known intersections you see on the map. Mark places of interest as waypoints and upload them to your GPS unit then head out the door. OziExplorer can be found at http://www.oziexplorer.com.
