James &/or Vince. Finally, a lightweight, easy to use deep-seeking detector with rock solid target response that even we old codgers can swing all day. My short field trip indicates that the disc is "iron proof" also.
The Cibola and Varquero will perform as well if not better than many detectors that sell for twice their price. My comparison with several high dollar rigs convinced me. Others are reporting similar results.

I love the Vaquero and about the only thing I would have done differently was put a small, variable control where the Frequency Shift is. I never really have a use for a frequency shift, but I would like a fully variable Autotune control.
Have a clicked STATIC, NO-AUTOTUNE setting, and then click it into manual adjustment from a very slow autotune to something not as zippy as the Vaquero has.
Discrimination? .. ECELLENT
Weight & balance? .. EXCELLENT
Pushbutton type/function? .. EXCELLENT
New Color? .. EXCELLENT
Depth of Detection and signal response? .. EXCELLENT
Autotune Speed? .. OOoops! Consider a slow-it-down revision!
Okay, out the door I go for a day of hunting, Vaquero style!

.....discrimination differ from the Tejon? I thought it was the same, isn't it? Thanks.

It has similar features and in a similar size, but it is definitely quieter in iron trash! Problem I am having right now is that I have hardly used the stock 8x9 coil. Most sites I have worked with it have been trashy and brushy, plus I am a big fan of smaller-than-stock coils, so I have really only been using the 5.75 coil. Compared with an Eldorado w/7" the Vaquero is definitely quieter!
I'll compare stock 8x9 coils more later today and tomorrow.
Please note that I AM saying that I certainly do like the new Vaquero. I AM NOT saying that the Eldorado is totally inferior and everyone ought to hurry out and get a new Vaquero, either.
Working some really ugly black sand river beachs here in the Portland area in the Disc. mode the Eldorado had a little 'edge' over the Vaquero. I hunt these beaches in the all metal accept Discriminate mode and my Eldorado adjusts just a little lower than me Vaquero does.

Now everybody will be able to afford a great detector. It was already getting very hard to find places to hunt. Now it will get harder.

Yesterday I decided to work them side-by-side, again, in the black sand river beach using the same-size 8x9's. I also worked them in a really annoying iron infested site with their smaller coils, then I took them to a thirt location where electrical interference can sometimes be terrible. The conclusions I have reached are:
I prefer the Vaquero's color. However, I would prefer the Eldorado's appearance if it didn't have glossy side decals and that pukey, shiny odd gold colored rod.
I like the momentary pushbutton of the Vaquero for pinpointing, but I like being able to switch between All Metal for searching and Discrimination w/o having to turn the Disc. control knob like on the Eldorado.
I like the quieter operation of the Vaquero in dense, small-iron trash, but I definitely prefer the Eldorado's full adjustsment at the lower-end of the Discrimination as it goes into all metal accept. The Vaquero comes close, but not quite there. The Eldorado handled the black sand beaches much, much better.
Working near power sources at several sites the Eldorado was noisier at full sensitvity and had to be reduced to about 9-10 to match the quieter operatoon of the Vaquero at full sensitivity. However, that was in the Disc. mode. In All Metal, both were chirpy, with wavering audio threshold. In the Disc. mode I got the Eldorado sensitivity reduced to match the Vaquero. Then, on a few located coins (turned out to be pennies and dimes), the Eldorado actually gave me a better 'hit'. That is, the coil was able to be raised an additional 1"

from your tests that you feel that the Eldorado outperforms the Vacquero? That the only advantage the Vacquero has is about an inch on the Eldorado in areas without any power sources near by? Also I feel obligated to ask one other question. You mentioned that the Eldorado bested the Vacquero by about an inch with both detectors having a comprable threshold and ground balanced. My question is: Were either or both units running at the highest possible stable sensitivity? Thanks for your comparsion, always appreciated.

On a dime or penny the Vaquero isn't much deeper than an Eldorado ( about 2 inch) but on nickels or gold rings the Vaquero is much deeper than the Eldorado.
And if you like small coils the 5.75 coil for the Vaquero has better performance than the 7 inch for the Eldorado.I always thought the 4 inch coil for the Eldo. is to small and the 7 inch to big for some places.I think for just 45 $ more you get more power with the Vaquero.

Andy

Just depends on how "low" and what we are referring to. I might take it to a test-bed that was made up of Florida beach sand many years ago (almost 30 now) but has had some changes due to all the many years of rains from around here.
Other than that, I have only found three sites, small in size, that are close to me and do get down in the 64-68 range on an MXT reading. It will take a week or so to get time to make it to the local 'Florida' site.

Instead, I wanted to comapre it with detectors that I own and use because they have proven themselves to me by way of in-field performance and results. On the highly mineralized river beaches I can hunt here in the Portland, Oregon, area, the Eldorado and my Classic III both did better handling the 'bad ground' environment with similar-sized coils. Using smaller coils in the 5

getting a little lazy. With all the beaches, some ravaged by several hurricanes, it would seem to me there is enough real estate open to hunting that you would have places to hunt for years...
