Testing the LF and MF Coiltek All Terrain X-TERRA coils.....

This post is an update, June 2017, and should get you the information. HH Randy

Although Coiltek has been unable to provide links to the Field Test reviews, here is a link to a Treasure Talk blog post that I wrote for Minelab, with a brief comparison of the coils.

http://www.minelab.com/anz/go-minelabbing/treasure-talk/three-new-x-terra-coils-from-coiltek

Toward the end of the blog post, you will see another link that takes you to the test I did in July 2011. Here is that link:

For those wanting to read my full field test on the LF and HF All Terrain coils, my report appears in the February 2013 edition of Western & Eastern Treasures. HH Randy

This link, as provided in the original post, is no longer legit.

No. It's just the last two released.... the LF & HF.
The MF coil has been out for over a year, and Randy's review of it is on the :coiltec: website.

There is some comparitive info with the MF, but the focus of the article is the new coils.

I have a 305. Can the digger coil be used on it or any other type of coil to get through trash? I am pleased withe the factory coil but tweeking the MD with another coil sounds interesting since I hunt parks and old house sites.

Unfortunately the 30/305 can't run 3kHz coils. You're only able to go 7.5kHz or 18.75kHz. The 50/505 and 70/705 can run all three frequencies, and the old 30 can only run one (7.5kHz).

Would the 6" 7.5kHZ cocentric coil or the 10" 7.5 kHZ round DD minelab coils either one improve the performance of my 305 significantly for coinshooting playgrounds and balll fields?

By "improve performance" are you talking about detector stability, depth, separation or results in the pouch? If you are in areas with higher levels of mineralization, and your stock 9-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz is a bit noisy,I'd offer that any DD coil will perform better than a concentric. If the "stock coil" is performing well, I'd say the mineralization level must be OK. If that is the case, the smaller concentric coil will separate a bit better due to not bingt as much turf under the coil at any one time. But the concentric 6-inch won't separate targets as well as the 6-inch HF DD coil at 18.75kHz. Any reason you are sticking to the MF 7.5 kHz coils or shying away from the DD's? Just curious. HH Randy

Ignorance probably. I'm not sure what is available. Which DD coil are you talking about that will fit the 305 and where do I find one. My area has low mineralization i assume since I don't have trouble. Love to hear you opinion, Digger. thanks for your help.

The 305 can use any of the 7.5 kHz coils, or the 18.75 kHz coils, either concentric and DD. Currently available for the X-TERRA 305 would be the 9-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz (probably the coil that came with your 305), the 9-inch concentric at 18.75 kHz, the 6-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz, the 6-inch DD at 18.75 kHz, the elliptical (5 X 10) DD at 18.75 kHz, the 10.5 inch DD at 7.5 kHz, the 10.5 inch at 18. 75 kHz, the 15 inch CoilTek All Terrain coil at 7.5 kHz and the 15-inch Coiltek All Terrain coil at 18.75 kHz. The Minelab coils should be available from any Minelab Dealer. And there are quite a few Minelab dealers who also sell the Coiltek coils. If yours doesn't, then you'd have to get them through a Coiltek dealer. Links to both can be found in the banners at the top of each forum. And if you look in the Feedback forum, you'll find a list of the dealers who help sponsor Findmall.

In addition to several pages in the book I wrote for the X-TERRA, there are several good posts in the FAQFAQ section that should help you decide which coil will serve your needs. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. HH Randy

Thanks Digger, Which of the higher frequency 6" or elliptical would work better than the 7.5 for my use? I've been trying to get your book for over a month. The Minelab website will not email me the registration which is required to get ythe whole book. I've read the sample on their sight and enjoyed it. I've called Minelab and left messages but never got a call back. I've jujst quit trying after four times. Sorry for all the questions, just trying to clarify my choices..

Personally, I prefer the 6-inch DD at 18.75 kHz, over the elliptical 5 X 10 DD at 18.75 kHz. Both are solid bottom coils and separate well. But the smaller sized 6-inch allows me to "work" the coil in amongst the trash better than the longer elliptical. Folks generally think of target separation as being a "left to right" thing. But when you think about it, separation is also a factor when one target is "above" the other. For example, lets place a couple targets along the numbers on a clock, say 5 inches apart. Left to right separation would be for the targets at 9:00 and 3:00. And as I said, both will separate them equally as well. But the park doesn't know which way we are walking. So it is just as likely that targets could be at 12:00 and 6:00. The elliptical could hit both targets at the same time, since they are 5 inches apart and the coil is 10 inches long. But since the 6-inch coil is smaller, when you operate with the 1/3 overlap that I recommend, you will hit each target separately. I realize it will take longer to hunt an area with the smaller coil. However I am of the belief that there are more old coins still hiding out there due to adjacent targets, than because of extreme depth. And in the "head to head" testing that I've done with my coils, I've found the 6-inch will hunt as deeply as the elliptical. Plus, the 6-inch is fully waterproof, opposed to being water resistant. JMHO HH Randy

That's what I came up with by your opinions and some other stuff I
googled. Ordered the 6" DD yesterday and can't wait to try it out! I'll let you know.

I've contacted Minelab regarding your inability to download the eBook. Would you mind sharing the email address you used to try and register, so they can investigate the problem? Thanks. HH Randy

The planets must have lined up correctly. I got it to download yesterday. I've read it once and learned bunches. I didn't know my detector had multi-tones until I read your book. Multi-tones and a new coil, here goes another learning time.I tried this morning for an hour before work. At a ball park, I dug some high signals that didn't TID like what I would usally dig . but the pitch didn't slide and there were coins waiting to be found. Tried it in a small stream also to test the HF DD coil a sand scoop recently purchaced. 14 pennies, 3 nickels, 3 dimes, and 6 quarters for the first trial run was satisfactory. Can't wait until I can really try it out.

Original link is now broken. I believe this is the updated one.

Yep! Thanks!
Coiltek recently updated and re-arranged their website, which rendered the old link useless.

They've apparently taken down all the old test reports and testimonials on the upgraded site.
Those articles may still show up, but they may not. I'll keep an eye out for them and post a new link if they materialize.

I have a hunch that Minelab taking over the production of the All Terrain coils for X-Terra's has something to do with their disappearance.

Although Coiltek has been unable to provide links to the Field Test reviews, here is a link to a Treasure Talk blog post that I wrote for Minelab, with a brief comparison of the coils.

Toward the end of the blog post, you will see another link that takes you to the test I did in July 2011. Here is that link:

I'll look through my documentation and see if I have copies of the other X-TERRA coil reviews that I wrote for Coiltek. If I find any, I'll post them up.
