Testing for diamonds...

For all you jewelry hunters out there, you should invest in a diamond tester, one that will also test for Moissanite. A regular diamond tester will tell you if it's CZ but not Moissanite. Moissanite is the most frequently used synthetic for diamond used today and it's properties are very similar to diamond so you need a tester that will recognize it. You can order them from any good jeweler's supply company. Just do a google. ROSENTHAL in Miami is a good one. That's where I ordered mine and I think I paid about $120. However, mine is only a diamond tester. I've got to get one for Moissanite and it's probably about the same price but they have one, I think, that is a combination tester. If you have a good jeweler nearby you can take it there and have them test it and tell you whether it's worth an appraisal. However, I still believe it's good to know what you've got before taking it anywhere. And while we're on this subject, it's preferable never to let the stone out of your site if you take it somewhere you're not familiar with. Have a good one everybody.

Hi Thinkin..

I have this tester and I spoke with the owner of the company because of I was concerned about moissanite as well but he and several jewelers told me its so new that its unlikely we will find very much of it in settings.. It tests positive for diamond because its hardness is similar to a real diamond. Moissanite hardness is .925 whereas a Diamond is 10.0 on the hardness scale.

Maybe someday I will get a Moissanite tester but right now I will not. :) The tester I have has been great for telling me how many ruby, opal, sapphire, etc rings I have.

Hi, Craig. I haven't gotten one yet either but eventually I will. I'm not positive but someone told me that Moissanite will look flawless so that can also be used when looking at a stone. If the stone appears to be too perfect then further analysis is needed. Of course, if you find any solitaire that looks to be over a carat you should have it tested and appraised. However, I don't have the knowledge or expertise to grade any stone so I would rather leave that to professionals. I do this with anything that tests positive on my tester and appears to be close to a carat.
