I've got a CZ20 and it started doing things like this about a year ago. I also ran into issues where sometimes using the pinpoint button would result in a high pitch or even a chattery signal.

I posted on a Fisher forum about it and the folks there who used CZ20's said the pinpoint button is notoriously known to eventually start malfunctioning like that - they said it's really expensive to have fixed and their best advice was to start weaning yourself off relying on using it and start trying to pinpoint in all metal mode.

FWIW, I love my CZ20 (even though it's not all that great on small gold), but it's now on it's last legs. I took it to the Bahamas and even though it was in it's case during the flight, I know it was opened and checked and it got damaged somehow. One of the battery leads was ripped off (fixed by soldering it at home) but worst of all, I can no longer turn it off using the dial. It has no "off click" anymore. As soon as I connect the battery pack, it's automatically on.

I tried getting reimbursed by the airlines but after several months of back and forth e-mails and phone calls, I got absolutely nowhere and they refused to help me out.

I still use it, but it's only a matter of time until the wear and tear of opening and closing the battery chamber every time I want to use it results in damage I'm sure.

I've heard that the cost of getting a CZ20 repaired is ridiculously high, so the time is coming very soon where I'll have to buy a new detector I think.

Sorry to have gotten off topic - in short, the pinpoint button is touchy on the machine. Odds are it will work sometimes and not work others - just start getting yourself used to using all metal mode to pinpoint and you'll be fine.
