Test of small elliptical coil on F75

go-rebels

New member
I just did an air test on the small elliptical coil and wanted to share my findings. The test was done in a small room with four double florescent lights hanging overhead. I experienced no interference. My detector was recently refurbished by Fisher; they only gave me back my original handle and rods and replaced the battery holder, DD coil and entire display!

Tests were done with my gold wedding band and a 1914-d penny. All readings were identical with each.

Constants: Disc = 6; Tone = 4

Sensitivity = 80
- All Metal gave a very faint signal between 10-11"
- DE, BC, PF showed each target between 6-7" with a good ID between 5-6"

Sensitivity = 70
- JE showed each target between 9-10" with good ID between 6-7"

Bottle Caps read choppy and non-repeatable. They were very easy to distinguish as a bad target. The BC mode seemed to have no effect on audio quality. This coil really eliminates the problems of IDing bottle caps.

Increasing sensitivity to the maximum level tended to degrade the audio signal somewhat while producing maybe another 1/2" depth. Reducing sensitivities to 40 in the DE and JE modes tended to improve the audio signal while losing about 1/2" depth. Further reduction in sensitivies to 20 in the DE and JE modes lost another 1/2" of depth while having no further effect on audio quality.

The only downside I see with this coil is that the small size cannot cover a lot of ground. If I can get a good ID at 6-7" in real ground, that would be great!

when you are hunting in the dirt everything changes. It is a deep coil and if you can turn up the power you can get some great depth

I followed up testing this coil in my test bed. The most surprising thing was the audio signal of this coil compared to the standard DD with respect to bottle caps. It was very easy to distinguish a bottle cap as a bad target.

I have a silver dime buried at 4" under a large rusty nail buried at 2" and a pre-1982 (copper) penny buried at 4" under a similarly placed rusty nail. This small coil could not produce any good signal on either target as they were completely masked by the nails.

What settings were you using when checking it in your test bed? Just curious! HH jim tn

Mode = DE, Disc = 6, Tone = 4, Ground Balance = 58, Sensitivity = 60, 70 and 80 (all same results; instability at 85)

I'll bet my red "Upstate" SC clay is very similar to your Virginia Hot soil. My red soil (clay) permanently stains any clothing.

I will post my results from tonights dig when I get home. I am gonna give mine the REAL DEAL test. Gonna head out to a favorite spot of mine and dig for a couple of hours this evening. I have the eliptical coil on. I won't be using a pinpointer tonight just the eliptical coil. I am going to be using all metal motion. Digging any targets over 10... Wish me luck

I took the eliptical coil out tonight. Something strange was going on with it. It didn't want to ground balance correctly. I know my soil is around 72 on the GB id where I am digging. For some reason the machine would GB at 99. It did not want to ground balance. Have you guys had problems with the machine not wanting to ground balance? Let me know.

My small coil had the same problem with all GB numbers coming in at 99 on a football field that I hunt regularly. I put the stock 11" coil back on and it ground balanced with no problem. I called Fisher and they said to send in the coil.

Yep sounds like the same thing mine is doing. I KNOW MY Ground isn't a 99 or even a 90. Stock coil in both spots have been around 70 On GB. I will put my Stocker back on and go see if it GB's with the stock coil on. If it does then I know it is my coil. Let me go and see real quick.

Well my stock coil GB's fine. Looks like i have a bad Eliptical just like you do. Well I will call in tommorow and Talk to Felix. Glad i kept the box. Only used it one time and knew something was messed up wilth Numbers that high.
