I was wondering how many of you on this board has a test garden and what are the depths you have....How do you have it layed out..Bud

Hello Bud. First of all, I had a roll of carpet out on the ground and placed different keepers several inches apart onto it, and just ran my coil over each target, writing the numerical readings down and the type of tones I got. Then I buried the targets at different depths, wrote the depths and what the targets were on bits of paper stuck to toothpicks in the ground to mark where the targets were so I didn't lose them! As I ran the coil over each target, aslo wrote down the readings. It's god to try this in a variety of soil conditions. I found that in wet or moist ground the detector many times read the targets clearer. Try coins standing on end. You'll find that coming at them from one angle, you may get an iffy signal, but from another angle you'll get a clear more stable reading. It's all about experimenting and writing things down so you remember what the results were and can go back to them. All very intriguing when first stating out, but well worth the effort, as you develop your instincts on your own. All the best with it.:):detecting::minelab:

Thanks for your reply, and hope to hear from other on their gardens...I view this site often and enjoy looking at the finds of all of you...Bud

Golden is right on with this. I'd even suggest, and actually I stole this idea from Andy's book, to also bury some trash items, especially ones you find pretty regularly, like maybe bottle caps, pull tabs, tin foil, etc. , only so you can get an idea of what they sound like too and how they respond under different ground conditions. Darn, I'm jealous, I live in an apartment, and I can't find a good, safe, place to build a test garden, but maybe out in the woods somewhere or something, or even a temporary one like at the beach or something. Who knows.:|Marc Trainor.
