Test Garden

There's a lot of data out there, but it depends on how much work you want to do. Optimally, you would want good and bad targets as well as solitary and contaminated targets. You would want these combinations at various depths. You can always do a subset, like 'silver coins at 4, 6, 8 and 10 inches'...even that is a minimum of 20 holes to dig if you include war nickels.

A great way to plant coin for a test garden is to take a piece of flat iron and use that to make a "slit hole" first. Then take your coin, and using a piece of duct tape, tape the coin with a piece of tape, thats narrower than the coin itself, to a five gallon paint stick, and leave a flapover at the top. Push the coin and stick down (with one motion),seesaw stick to break loose the coin, pull your stick up an inch, turn your stick a few degrees, tamp coin and pull out your stick. (The trick is to get your duct tape to only stick enough for the one way trip and not be a hassle to dislodge at the bottom of the hole.) I've found that the target settles in way faster (to best detectability) once you water your targets in well. (Can be as fast as just a couple days.) Works great.
