I few weeks ago I posted a question as to what small coil to get. I ended up with the 5.3. I just purchased the 4x6 as well. Both coils are "v-nulled". When in doubt - get 'em both...
Here are my impressions of both compared to each other after a run in the test garden:
5.3 Pros:
1) A surprisingly deep little coil. It hangs right with the 10DD as far as depth is concerned.
2) Bottlecap rejection.
3) Easy pinpointing
4) Adequate, but not stellar performance in trashy areas. Only marginally better than the 10DD when checking from various angles.
5.3 Cons:
1) Iron falsing
2) Sensitive to mineralization.
3) Less sensitive to coins on edge.
4x6 Pros:
1) VERY sharp response in the trash. This coil is supreme in separating the wheat from the chaff. One can virtually visualize what's in the ground in pinpoint mode. I have a spot in my yard where nails were evidently spilled when my home was built. I can hear individual nails in all metal mode with the 4x6 and even tell to an extent, which way they're pointing!
2) Greatly reduced iron falsing.
3) Easily maneuverable around obstacles in in the woods.
4) Coin on edge sensitivity.
4x6 cons:
1) Depth. About 6-7" on a silver dime in the garden is about it: pretty respectable considering that the 4x6 is so small it's comical
2) Discrimination of bottlecaps (analyze screen can be used to get around this).
3) Slightly more involved pinpointing when attempting to keep turf damage to a minimum.
