Test Fired the Golden UMax!

Took the Golden Umax out yesterday for the first time. Went to an old town which has been abandoned, and spent the day digging targets. Discrimination worked very good and identified a lot of the trash. Stopped on the way home to try a local park, and the Golden really shined. I am a fan of the tones, it helps to know whats happening under that coil, and the tones were spot on.

At the moment I am digging every target(except iron) so that I can learn what sounds belong to what objects. At the park we stopped at, I recovered $1.68 in clad within about 30 minutes.

I believe this Golden is a keeper. Would not be my first choice for a relic machine, but for parks, yards, and tot lots....I think it will be tough to beat!

I am hooked on these Tesoro's!

It's a nice detector. Didn't use mine much just after I got it, didn't have the depth of the Cortes. Then I tweaked the GB pot from slightly negative to slightly positive, my soil is quite mild. That made a noticeable difference in depth, now both detectors seem to be equal and now I use it a lot more. Tones are great to have and with careful sweeps from different directions it can separate goodies from trash. Tested mine with the 8x9, 5.75 concentric, 8"DD, 7" concentric, 8" brown donut. The 8x9 works best for me for depth and separation. In my test garden it separates a dime at 5" deep that is close to a nail at 3" deep. With the 5.75 and 7" coils I can hear only the nail. The 8"DD and the brown donut seem to be equal to the 8x9. Switching to All Metal gives me a good indication of target depth when Treshold is set barely audible.

Thanks for the tips, I was out again with it this morning and found a few dollars in coins. I found a $1 coin, one of the golden ones that was made in 2007 which was the high point for the day. It was misting so I had the box covered, and it went right along and did a nice job for me. I am going to have to work on the nickel tone, because it isn't so easy to identify it from the other mid tone, but time should fix that. I also have to get a coil cover for my 8X9, I would think that would be a "stock" item, almost like buying a car with three wheels, and they will gladly sell you the fourth one for a small fee....if I have any complaints...that is probably the only one.

I am familiar with the GB pot, how can I adjust mine so that it is optimal? Is there a method you use to determine when you are slightly positive?

I really enjoyed the Silver UMax, but this Golden....is SWEET! I see many hours being put on this machine in the future.

Check the GB setting in All Metal mode before you make any adjustment. I did my adjustment in a park where there was no metal in the ground. The pot is the blue upper left one, on the circuit board. Need a Phillips screwdriver to get the cover off and a plastic adjusting tool. Pull bottom right corner of the cover away only enough to sqeeze the tool in. With detector turned on, turn pot CW just a tiny hair for more positive, leave the cover loose for now, bob the coil to check adjustment in All Metal mode. Should hear a slight increase in sound when coil is being lowered to the ground from 6" high. The lower right blue pot is for Disc or Notch adjustment.

I am not getting very good depth with the air tests. 5-6 inches on most coins. Is that average for this machine or do I need to send it in and have them tune it up for me? Not trying to be picky, and I know air tests dont always tell the trus story of what the detector will do in the ground....just wondering.

John, My Golden air tested with the 8x9 coil, min Disc, and Sens past 10 I get a decent signal at 6", weaker at 6.5", barely any at 7". But I get the same response from a dime buried in the ground at those depths. Also don't forget about the threshold setting, if set too low it will be hard to hear signals. Next time when you are in a park, find a clean area and bury a clad dime 6" deep, cover it, and see what kind of signal you get. My Golden GB is slightly positive for my soil.

I think I will probably just keep working with it and learn it better. I dont really know enough about what I am doing yet to be concerned with fine tuning anything really...lol. Some good points you brought up about the disc and the sensitivity....and the threshhold. I had it set up in disc mode with the settings where I usually use it to coin hunt. I disc'd out pull tabs for the most part, but still get good hits on my gold ring and a borderline hit on a nickel. Tabs are blips though, so I have that much figured out so far. I think that more time behind thid detector will increase my confidence with it, as well as the ability to discern between treasure...and most trash.

I have some places I plan to relic hunt, but they are being reserved for when I get my Tejon. For the coinshooting that my son and I do here locally, this Golden is a sweet machine, just haven't found any jewelry other than one silver earring so far.

Thanks for your help with the Golden, I will keep this detector for sure...it aint goin nowhere!
