Tesoro warranty

Grey Ghost

New member
I purchased a second hand detector that looks like its never been used. The coil is bad, for sure. Would Tesoro warranty something like this, or should I just buy a new coil ? Thanks for your time. LJ

Well there are two ways to deal with this. If you purchased it and have been using it and all of a sudden the coil went bad I might email or write to them and just tell them you think you have a bad coil and ask them if they could check it out. If you knew the coil was bad or it was sold to you as non working I would purchase another coil In fact you could probably come up with a deal on a used one from this site. Just my opinion.

Heres what I do. It's radical, but I've had no problems.

I just send the detector to Tesoro. I called a few times and their only response was to send it in and they'd take care of it. I include a letter to tell them what is wrong and that is that. They call in a few days and tell me it has been recieved and they will let me know when it is shipping back. That's it.

Now, Tesoro has the discretion to repair and they claim not to warrant the detector except to the original owner. Here's what their warranty states:

This instrument is warranted to be free of defects in material and workmanship as long as it is owned by the original consumer purchaser. This warranty is not transferable and is valid only if the warranty registration card has been completed and mailed within 10 days of purchase.

TESORO will, at its option, repair or replace any instrument covered by this warranty, without charge, except for transportation charges, at its factory in Prescott, Arizona.

This warranty excludes batteries, damage caused by leaky batteries, cable breakage due to flexing on body mount units, and wear of the searchcoil housing. Also excluded are instruments which have been abused, altered, or repaired by an unauthorized party.

However, I have yet to have them refuse or charge me for any detector I've had in their shop. I've spoken to James Gifford about this and he said they normally just fix it unless it looks like the unit has been abused.

I tried the spring relief trick and it didn't work. Will send it to the factory Monday and see what happens. Thanks for the replies. LJ

I have never had problems with the warranty. I sent my Cibola back in January and got it back in less than 2 weeks. The coil had gone bad. They replaced the coil, calibrated the new one and didnt charge me a dime...d2

Yes, I apologize for that. When I first registered I didn't realize that there was already a Grey Ghost. No offence to the original Grey Ghost. That was an old track name from my racing days and it just kind of stuck. If its confusing to anyone, I don't mind re registering if thats possible. Again, my apologies. Larry J

I think it will muddy the waters with their being two, Maybe you could select another name.
Lewis is a good man, we all respect. Thank you for your considerations.

Who would have thunk? More than 1 Gray/Grey Ghost east of the Mississppi?
It seems I stumble about in a perpetual state of confusion anyway... MD helps keep me propped upright.
The Mayor is correct, and he's trying to help us!:)
